Dry and Pleasant But Another Change Soon/El Nino Impact on Winter

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Tropical Atlantic is quiet. There is one area with between a 30 and 50% chance of developing in the eastern Pacific.

Jet Stream is on the move this week. Another cold front will sweep through the plains and eastern US on Thursday and Friday bringing rain and even some severe weather. On Wednesday, look for some severe storms over the central plains. Highs will be in the 50s and 60s across the Pacific Northwest, Rockies and much of the northeast. First Winter Storm Warning of the season is in effect for the mountains near Salt Lake City (elevations above 8,000 feet). Across the south, highs will be in the 80s. There will be some 90s across the desert southwest.

Houston will be mild with lows in the 60s and highs in the 80s. Rain returns Thursday afternoon and there could be some severe storms especially early Friday. More rain is possible on Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do cat or gato, pronounced gah-TOH. Taking care of gatos can make your feet hurt. See related story in the And More section.

There are no cats but there is one dog named Max in our award winning Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Volume 2 should arrive this week. AND MORE
New figure at right shows El Nino and La Nina winter weather patterns. The latest report from the Climate Prediction Center indicates that sea surface temperatures (eastern Pacific) are running 1 degree above normal. And they are forecasting that the El Nino pattern will strengthen and last through the winter. For the upcoming winter, this likely will mean that much of the south will be wet and on the cool side. For the Ohio Valley it likely means dry weather. From Alaska through western and most of southern Canada as well as the northern one or two tiers of states (through the Great Lakes) will be warmer than usual.

My good friend Mollie gave me a tip that kids eat for $2.50 on Sunday evenings at the SouperSalad in Sugar Land (Town Center area). I sent SouperSalad an email requesting more information (like is this deal for every Souper Salad). So, I will let you know.

Megan is loving life at the cat hospital. She is definitely in her element taking care of those cats. But, her feet are tired...she had foot surgery in May. If anyone has any suggestions for her, please let me know.

I briefly mentioned that Sarah turned 8 on Sunday. Well, let me tell you what that rascal did this time. I had wrapped her gifts and put them in our master closet. I figured surely Gordy or I will hear if she tried to get into them. As I have mentioned before, she is often up well before the crack of dawn. Well, that little stinker (after having already kicked Gordy out of the bed around 3 am) woke up around 4:30 and at some point got into those gifts. When I woke up around 7 (and by the way, she had tried to get me up a few times between 4:30 and 7), she said, "I'm sorry I opened all of my presents". I couldn't believe me eyes. She had somehow (without me waking up) dragged all of the presents into the living room and opened them. I did not hear a thing. I had no inkling of what she was doing. There was paper and cardboard everywhere. What was I to do...she was the birthday girl. Oh well!

We had a birthday greeting on the marquee in front of Sarah's school. On Monday evening, I decided to drive over and get a snapshot. Well, I was just in the nick of time. The sign changing volunteer was literally reaching to start pulling the letters down. And I cried, "stop, stop...let me take a picture before you do that". So, she laughed and backed up so I could do just that. Now, that was cutting it close. I guess greetings demand is very high and they only leave up the messages for about 2 days. I had just noticed it that morning. Almost missed it completely!!!

Well, don't miss out on the nice weather on Wednesday!
Enjoy!

Cold front almost here/How much milk in your cereal?

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Nice and quiet in the tropics! Yay!!!

A front it moving across the central US and producing some severe weather in Illinois this evening as I write this post. On Monday, there will be thunderstorms over south Texas and the southeast as well as the Great Lakes states, the northeast and the Eastern seaboard. Highs will be in the 40s and 50s over the Great Lakes states. Lots of 80s and 90s across the southeast and south Texas. 100+ in the desert southwest. 70s and 80s along the west coast. 80s and 90s Intermountain Region. 60s northern plains. 60s and 70s Midwest, central plains and north Texas.

Houston, there could be an isolated storm. It will be a warm day initially. Then a cold front moves through in the early afternoon. This will be usher in some lower humidity and morning temperatures will be in the 60s for a couple days starting Tuesday. Next cold front arrives Friday with thunderstorms. Should be a pleasantly mild weekend coming up.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do milk or leche, pronounced leh-CHAY. How much leche do you like with your cereal. See AND MORE for a discussion.

Get a jump on holiday shopping...order our award winning Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. And Volume 2 should arrive this week. Order you copy from www.frankandpaco.com/, http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. AND MORE
Well, I've been meaning to bring this up for a while and now, I just can't wait anymore. It's the cereal thing...you know--the amount of milk. I finally got it through my head that my husband just doesn't like a lot of milk in the cereal. You can definitely see the cereal in his bowl. Some of it is longing to be wet. Now I on the other hand...like to drown it. I want there to be milk left over and then I like to drink it all up. Now, this is not a toilet paper over/under thing, but I think this could be a pattern found in most marriages. Therapists say that we subconciously look for a mate who rounds us out. And even though these differences often drive us crazy, it is precisely those differences that our subconcious knows we need to make it through this world in the most optimal fashion. I'll bet if you checked with your spouse, you would find that they like the amount of milk in the cereal to be opposite the level you like. Let me know...I think this might be book material.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a sweet little angel (Courtney) with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She had been a special guest at The Wiggles when we got to meet them. Courtney's mother and grandmother are valiantly fighting to get the funds they need for her care. As part of that effort, Courtney recently got to meet Elvis. For more, see this article:
http://www.hcnonline.com/articles/2009/09/27/pasadena_citizen/news/092709_houston_elvis.txt

Sarah turned 8 this weekend. I thank God that she is so healthy and has such a zest for life. We enjoyed looking at pictures of her as a very tiny baby. She was 4 lb 15 oz at birth. Now, she is a 70 lb bruiser! Wow! I can barely move her much less pick her up any more. Happy Birthday Sarah!!!

Just heard back from Randy Beall, close friend and president of Parents and Researchers Interested in Smith-Magenis Syndrome (PRISMS). The web site is www.prisms.org. This is the syndrome that Sarah has. He said 300 families attended the international conference and there are only 650 known cases in the world. When we first got Sarah diagnosed, we were told that the incidence rate is 1 in 25,000. Now, the researchers announced they think it is 1 in 15,000. The first would have been 250,000 people in the world...now the number is more like 400,000. Obviously, it is way underdiagnosed (some because of mis-diagnosis).

Congratulations and best wishes to Megan!!! She got her first job at a place that cares for cats. She starts tomorrow!!! When she volunteered at CAP, they called her The Cat Lady, because she was so good with cats. Yep...they are getting a good one!

Have a great week everyone!

Warming Up/Next Front/New Poll/Garden Pests/Eating More Candy

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
One new area has popped up in the eastern Atlantic, but the chance for development is less than 30% (according to the NHC). In the eastern Pacific, there is tropical depression Nora and another area with less than a 30% chance for developing.

Upper low will sit over central US one more day and then lift out to the northeast over the weekend. This will swing a weak front through Texas, slightly increasing rain chances on Saturday. Hot spot on Friday will be Phoenix with a high near 100. There will be some 90s in Florida and over the western (non-coastal) US. Highs will be in the 60s around Denver and into the Midwest. Elsewhere, highs will be in the 70s and 80s.

Houston will have some showers again on Friday. Thursday, most areas averaged about 1/3 to 1/2 of an inch. Saturday, there could be a couple thunderstorms. A weak front will move through Texas, but I don't think it will cool Houston off. In fact, Friday's highs will be in the low to middle 80s and then warmer over the weekend. Next front moves through end of the coming week.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do garden or jardín, pronounced har-DEEN. Do you have a jardín? Answer our new poll.

We have been giving scores of our ESL DVD to various churches in the Houston area and even in Irving, Texas. It is helping to get the buzz going. In the meantime, for all of us whose primary language is English (and want to learn Spanish), there is our award winning Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. It makes a wonderful birthday or Christmas/holiday gift for the youngsters. And, Volume 2 should be here within days. You can order the your copy from www.frankandpaco.com/, http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, go to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
Our poll about favorite high temperature is closed. The high in Houston today was in the mid-70s, it was probably widely appreciated because 63% of our respondents said highs in the 70s are their favorite. 27% said they like highs in the 80s. 9% said they like highs int he 90s. No one said they liked higher or lowers than those numbers. Thanks to all who participated.

Now that the weather is cooling down, I thought it would be nice to see how you all feel about doing yard work. You can pick more than one type of yard work that you enjoy (or you can say that you don't do any yard work). Thanks in advance for participating.

Okay, my mother, with her eagle sharp gardening eye, noticed that I had these little white things on my sago palm. She took the liberty of asking about it at her favorite nursery. They said it was probably thrips and I needed to apply some all season horticultural oil using a sprayer. So, I picked some up and applied it. I'll let you know if it works. I will tell you that I saw a neighbor's yard with these little white things all over their sagos. Another friend told me that something wiped out all of their hibiscus plants (guess I'd better go check on mine). And, the Houston Chronicle ran an article in the past week that there are 4 pests attacking area plants (especially ornamentals). So, check out those plants everyone.

At the grocery store today, Patrice told me that all of sudden they are noticing that people are buying more candy. She speculated that maybe its a way of handling stress. I think people are looking ahead to Halloween and practicing their candy eating techniques. She also said that sales of beauty products have increased. She said that sales really dropped off over the summer. Now, women are telling her, you know what, I'm just going to go ahead and get what I want. I can tell you that I recently bought two new nail polish colors. But, that was because I didn't think my hot pink polish was very fall like. Who knows? Interesting observations there. Any thoughts?

Well, don't each too much candy.

Happy weekend everyone!

Pleasant Weather Forecast/Next Rain/New Museum in Sugar Land

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Fall officially began this afternoon. And in Houston, a nice cold front arrived to usher it in.

Hurricane season doesn't officially end until November 30th. But, it is nice and quiet in the Atlantic. New tropical depression has popped up in the Pacific and is forecast by NHC to become a weak tropical storm as it moves west. Should weaken before it becomes and issue for any land area.

Some parts of the country including the Rio Grande Valley have a threat for flooding this evening due to rain. Weather ahead of a cold front (and even behind it) is rainy. On Wednesday, there will be showers and thunderstorms mainly over the eastern US. Mid-level low over central US will kick out to east in a couple days bringing another band of rain through Texas. It will be chilly over the Rockies...Denver vicinity with some locations not breaking 50. Meanwhile it will be hot over the western mountain ranges with highs in the 90s. Elsewheres highs will be in the 70s and 80s.

Houston had some nice soaking rains today. Inside the loop, several locations picked up more than 2 inches of rain (data from the Harris County Office of Emergency Management). Sugar Land area picked up from 6/10 to just over an inch. And, as we began fall this afternoon, there was a pleasant coolness in the air. Look for some pleasant temperatures over the next 2 days. More storms move through Friday evening. There will be a stronger cold front a week from Wednesday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do museum or museo, pronounces moo-SAY-oh. There is a new museo in Sugar Land. See the AND MORE section for details.

Kids love museums because they love to learn. And they love our award winning Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Liza Peiffer sent me this note about a special Awareness Day the first Monday of October.
The United Nations has chosen the first Monday in October to be World Habitat Day - a day to stand up and let it be known that affordable, adequate housing should be a priority everywhere. I've put together a blogger press release to help get the message out - there are videos, photos, banners, and even a Flickr photo petition you can use:http://worldhabitatdaynews.com.

In case you haven't heard, the Museum of Natural Science is opening up a location in Sugar Land on October 3rd. Right out of the gate, they will have a special exhibit about the Chronicles of Narnia. Here is a link to a Houston Business Journal article about the new museum site which will be located at University Blvd. and New Territory Blvd. in Telfair.

Severe Weather Threat/Fall Begins Tuesday/My Favorite Billy Gilman Song

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Nice and quiet in the tropical Atlantic Basin and only one area with less than a 30% chance of developing in the Pacific.

Mid to upper low will be a big weather maker this week. It is over the central US. Now, it is supposed to push a cold front through the southern plains...with showers and thunderstorms (some severe along with it). Note, the slight risk for severe weather on Monday from north Texas into western Missouri. Nice and cool on Monday in Denver--high near 50. Phoenix, however, should be well over 100 for a high. 80s and 90s across the southeast and southern plains. Elsewhere, mainly 60s and 70s. Look for rain from the southeast into the Great Lakes (except dry in New England). There will be rain over the Rockies too.

Houston will be warm and muggy with scattered storms on Monday. Rain will be more widespread on Tuesday as the cold front approaches. Models say it will move through, but the air mass will be very shallow and the front will stall and produce some more rain even into Wednesday. Another weak front arrives Friday and then a stronger one the following Tuesday. Some of the storm on Tuesday could become severe. And, there could be some flooding.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do earth or Tierra, pronounced tee-AIR-rrrahh. Don't forget to roll the rr. How are you spending your time on this Tierra? I have a wonderful, inspirational song for you in the AND MORE section.

The earth was green, lush and just plain beautiful (at least where we were ) when shot our award winning Volume 1 DVD of Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. And I can not notify all of you each time due to emailing limits.

Tuesday, September 22nd, will mark the official start of Fall. It is the autumnal equinox and according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, the official start is at 3:18 pm that afternoon (central time zone). This is the date in the Northern Hemisphere when the length of night and day are approximately the same (12 hours). The length of daylight will now be less than the length of night and will continue to decrease.

I have been constantly reminded of Billy Gilman since Megan returned from the MDA telethon. She is playing his music 24/7. Since I am also an expert, by exposure, I thought I would share with you my favorite of all of his songs. In fact, this might be my favorite song of all time. It's not the best recording (from his appearance on Larry King Live). But, I still hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. The song is called "My Time On Earth". Keep in mind, this recording is from when he was 13. Now, he is 21. See his photo with Megan at right.

Temperature and Rain Outlook Next 3 Months/More Wet Weather On Way

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Two areas being monitored in Atlantic...closest to US the remnants of Fred (at least in part). According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), less than a 30% chance to develop for both.

In the Pacific, we have Tropical Storm Marty, which the NHC forecasts a turning southwestward and weakening trend. A 2nd area closer to the Mexican coast has between a 30 and 50% chance of developing.

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has published its 3 month outlook (for October/November/December) for precipation and temperature for the continental US. Notice the above normal rainfall chances for the Gulf Coast and drought stricken areas of Texas. Temperature wise this area should be about average while much of the west should have above normal temperatures.

Drought-wise National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projects that from now through December the drought situation will improve in several areas including the most severely parched areas of Texas. There is still an excessive drought in coastal and southern Texas. So, this is good news!!!

On Friday, some thunderstorms southeast and southern Rockies with the hottest spot being Phoenix at about 100. 80s and 90s through the south and some 90s through the Intermountain Region. Feeling fall in the northeast with highs in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Houston, more semi-pleasant weather through the weekend with a gradual increase in humidity. Highs will be mainly in the 80s. New upper low slides into central US, putting Texas back in the wet flow starting early in the coming week and continuing for several days. So, just plan on taking your umbrella with you next week.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do cereal or cereal, pronounced sair-ray-AL. Yes, cereal is spelled the same way in Spanish as it is in English, but notice that it is pronounced differently. For a fun story about cereal, see the AND MORE section.

Cereal is one of the food words we cover in our award winning Volume 1 DVD of Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. From the What is Sarah Up to Department:
How about sharing her love of chocolate milk with the whole family. Of course we were down to our last gallon of milk as I was behind on getting to the grocery store. Well, Sarah decides to embellish it by pouring most of a bottle of chocolate syrup into that one remaining gallon. MMMM...you know chocolate milk added to my meatball recipe makes an interesting taste...maybe something like mole meatballs...why she is a genius--that Sarah. It's not so bad--tastes good on cereal too.

Sarah often wakes up in the middle of the night and/or very early. Well at 4:30 am I hear this repeated beep, beep, beep sound. I'm thinking...now what is she doing? Well, she wanted a bowl of cereal. And somehow she figured that since the clean bowls were in the dishwashwer, pushing buttons on the front might make a bowl of cereal magically appear. You know...I think she is just ahead of her time...I'm waiting for a device where you can punch buttons and just have the dish materialize...dish/food and all (kind of like it works on Star Trek with the replicators). Ahhhh...if only. I tell you what...that would really be useful when you want little one to fix her own bowl of cereal rather than waking you up at 4:30 in the morning.

Have a fantastic Friday everyone!

Megan and Billy Gilman/Mild Weather Continues/New Poll/Dark Lover

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
There are three areas being watched in the Atlantic (one the remnants of Fred). According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), all have less than a 30% chance of developing. In the Pacific there is one area with more than a 50% chance of developing.

In Louisiana and Arkansas, the low pressure area that brought us rain while it was over the Gulf, is meandering and has actually slid slightly to the southwest. Flood watches are in effect this evening for much of those 2 states. Looks like it won't lift out until the end of the week--bad news for these folks--flooding is a big concern.

On Wednesday, more rain for Arklatex and some scattered storms from the southeast into the southwest. A taste of fall in the northeast with highs in the 60s. Warm spot will be around Phoenix with highs near 100. Most of the rest of the country will have highs in the 70s and 80s.

Houston, we have not had 90s since the 8th of September. High today was only 82. Most recently, this is attributable to that low pressure area that moved in from the Gulf...first with its rain and then with the northerly flow around it (including cloud cover). For the rest of the week...we should see more of the same with isolated showers or thunderstorms possible.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do lover or amante, pronounced ah-MAHN-tay. Have you ever heard of the book series called Dark Lover? I have a brief review in the AND MORE section.

I am getting more and more requests for Volume 2 of our DVD series, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Hang on everyone...it is ordered. We should be getting 1000 copies in about a week. In the meantime, you can order the award winning Volume 1 of the series from www.frankandpaco.com/, http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. Our poll about how you feel about football season is closed. 60% said they love it. 40% said they could take or leave it. No one said that it made them a football widow or widower or that they couldn't wait for it to be over. Thanks to all who participated.

Our new poll is about your favorite daytime temperature...do you like it hot, cold or somewhere in between. Only one answer is allowed. Thanks in advance for sharing your opinion.

Well tonight I was shooing a lizard out the back door. I barely touched the little guy, but his tail came right over. It was wiggling like crazy. Well, I've seen this before, but I got to wondering if that hurt him. So, I checked around and the consensus was that it doesn't hurt them, that it is a defense mechanism because their wiggly tail gets the attention of predators. Here is a link to what I thought was one of the best answers:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080620215849AAqbaky

Yesterday, Sarah and I put in our fall garden. We had very good luck with sweet peas last fall and winter. So, we decided to try a slight variation...sugar snap peas. We also put in broccoli and baby spinach--both firsts for me. Sarah had a ball getting dirty from head to toe. I wonder if this will make her grow more. She's growing so fast already. I'll be posting some photos once the plants start growing.

Finally, Megan posted her Billy Gilman photos on Facebook!!! As I posted previously, Megan fulfilled her life long dream of meeting him when she became his special guest at this year's MDA telethon. He was one of the celebrity performers. See photo at right. He sure has grown up. I will tell you that he was quite the gentleman--very kind to Megan. Who knows...maybe Megan will end up being Mrs. Billy Gilman (that's what I call her to tease her). Billy is now in Nashville working on his new CD. He is planning to go more country...a move I think is very smart for him due to the popularity of that type of music. Previously he performed a variety of music. He was the CMA Rookie of the year several years ago.

Okay Mom and Megan--don't read this part...last blog post, I asked you to fill in the blank. Twilight is to teenage girls as __________ is to adult women. The answer is the Dark Lover series of books. A friend gave me the first one as a gift. There are 7 written and the author may end up writing 3 more. I have 2 words for this series: "Oh My". Megan and Mom--you can't read this series. Nuff said.

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!

No Grace but Maybe Fred Again/Sarah Marks Ike Anniversary in a Unique Way

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Fred may redevelop as what is left of it drifts westward in the central Atlantic. Area that was in Gulf is now over northeast Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana and drifting northeastward. Pacific has only one disturbed area (with less than a 30% chance for development).

Today is the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Ike, the storm that pummeled Houston...knocking out power for weeks in some cases. As we drove down one Sugar Land street today, I noticed there are still some roofs with blue tarps.

Across the US on Monday, lots of readings in the 80s with thuderstorms along the Rockies and in the southeast. 100+ around Phoenix.

Houston will be warm and muggy with a few thunderstorms. We are on the back side of the upper low. There could be a few showers or thunderstorms each day with isolated downpours. Looks like the threat for widespread flooding is past for the time being.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do skirt or falda, pronounced FAHL-dah. Do you have a poodle falda? Find out why I ask in the AND MORE section.

We don't have any poodles but we do have a Bichon-Frise in our award winning DVD Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Order from www.frankandpaco.com/, http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, go to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
In anticipation of the one year anniversary, Sarah decided to do something to remind us just how fun it was. She went to our 2nd refrigerator in the laundry room and cranked the thermostat all the way down to zero. By the time, I figured it out, most of the meat we store in that freezer was ruined. I had flashbacks as I threw packages of room temperature meat into the trash. We'll never forget Ike---not if Sarah has anything to do with it.

Here's a riddle for you...Twilight is to teenage girls as _______________ is to women. I'll have the answer in my next post.

And I should have a new poll with my next post. I've been having some technical difficulties so please excuse the closed poll and un-updated Storm Prediction Center graphics.

A couple weeks ago I told you about a severely disabled little girl who was visiting The Wiggles at the same time we did. The grandmother and mother have exhausted all of their savings as they valiantly care for this child. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a lot of financial help out there. You almost have to be living on the street (or take a vow of poverty as they say) before you can get any help. It's either that or get on waiting lists which take several years. This grandmother doesn't want to rely on the government...so they are having a fundraiser. Here is some information from an amazing lady, Linda Rosas:

Flooding Concern with TX Gulf Coast System

HURRICANES AND WEATHER

Even though Fred is turning in a direction toward the US, it is weakening. The big stories are the disturbed area along the eastern seaboard (New Jersey/MD/NY vicinity) and the area off the Texas coast. For the first system, there is potential for severe weather, coastal flooding and lots of rain. It is a non-tropical system which probably won't become tropical.

For the Texas system, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says less than a 30% chance for development. I say let's be prepared for heavy rain Friday/Saturday. This reminds me in some ways of Allison in 2001, because it is a non-tropical mid level system off the coast. As you may recall, Allison suddenly (and this is controversial) became designated as tropical about 6 hours before landfall along the upper Texas coast. The really bad part was when it stalled over land and meandered about, dropping 3 more rounds of heavy rain after landfall. In the current case, the storm should move inland and away from Texas on Sunday. It should be steered away from Texas because of the upper low over the central US. So bottom line is be ready for rainy Friday and Saturday in Texas (especially the coast) and also southwest Louisiana. There could be flooding. Then, things should get much better on Sunday. Whether this system becomes Grace remains to be seen.

100+ desert southwest today. Slight risk severe storms NJ/NY/MD/DE area. Thunderstorms over much of south and southeast. Most areas highs in the 60s to 80s. Those 80s will be humid anywhere in south.

Houston, look for some heavy rain Friday and Saturday with much improved weather on Sunday. Watch out for flooding and remember, Turn Around, Don't Drown.

New TX License Plates
My car turned 7 years old recently and I was surprised to learn that I had to get new plates. The good news was that it didn't cost extra (beyone the annual registration renewal) and I was able to mail in the application and not stand in line at the DMV...yay!!! The plates arrived within a week and I really like the more colorful version. So, you'll see these either on cars that are at least 7 years old or on brand new cars.

McAuliffe Middle School on the Mend and Improving After Ike

The following article was sent to me by my good friend Leslie Williams--Houston Chronicle Reporter. The kids at McAuliffe Middle School had to go to school at another campus after Hurricane Ike--because their school sustained so much damage. The school reopened last year and now as the new school year begins, everyone is seeing a change in the attitude of the kids. Check out this very positive story:

Forget about Fred--Watch that back door!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Fred is on the verge of becoming a hurricane (as I write this) and latest forecast from National Hurricane Center (NHC) shows a turn to northwest toward the end of the 5 day forecast period. However, fewer models are now advertising an eventual turn to the west.

Low pressure is still along eastern seaboard...still less than 30% chance of developing according to NHC.

Linda (eastern Pacific) is forecast to take a slow turn toward northeast but weakening to a remnant low by then.

For those in Texas and southern Louisiana, we need to look less at Fred and keep a wary eye on our backdoor. I noticed this yesterday but today models are becoming more insistent that some low pressure/troughiness will develop and persist along the Gulf coast. I'm not very concerned about development (although never rule that out even if wind shear is forecast to be against it) but the possibility of extended rounds of heavy rain. Today, moisture came back in fast and one thunderstorms dropped 1.8 inches in Sugar Land and 1.7 inches in Missouri City according to the Harris County Office of Emergency Management's rain gauge network.

So, Houston, get out the umbrellas, raincoats and galoshes. It looks like there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain on and off (mainly in the afternoons) through the weekend.

Nationwide on Wednesday, look for some showers and thunderstorms in the south...highs in the 80s and 90s there except a few spots like Phoenix 100+. Elsewhere highs in the 60, 70s and 80s.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do door or puerta, pronounced PWEAR-tah. Let's keep an eye on our back puerta.

A puerta is a part of our house and we go over rooms of the house in Chapter 1 of our award winning DVD Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, Volume 1. AND MORE
From the "I'm not so sure how I should take that department"...

I was riding up a downtown elevator today. I was alone with one other woman. She exclaimed "Oh don't you look like a pretty little Barbie doll!" I was so taken aback, all I could reply was..."well, I feel like an old Barbie doll". Then she said..."Well you look good for your age...you know considering how old you are". This was definitely a first for me...never been compared to a Barbie doll. I was wearing a blouse, nice capris and open toed sandals (not white of course Ha!). I wonder if she would have said the same thing if I had been wearing one of my old suits. Interesting...

Have a safe Wednesday. Keep those umbrellas handy.

Tropical Depression #7/Forecast/End of Summer--Pool-wise

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Tropical Depression #7 formed this afternoon in the far eastern Atlantic. National Hurricane Center is forecasting it to become a tropical storm but not a hurricane and that it will eventually turn toward the northeast. Long range members of the ensemble models show a movement back toward the west. So, I'll watch it for you.

Meanwhile, just off the eastern seaboard, non-tropical low pressure will bring squalls of rain to the outer banks of North Carolina as well as coastal flooding. According to NHC, chance of it developing is less than 30%.

In the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Linda is forecast to become a hurricane but stay away from land as it moves northwestward.

On Tuesday, look over for some severe storms over the northern plains into the western Minnesota. There will be some thunderstorms in many places, especially the southeast and some spots in Texas. High in the 90s for some of the southeast, Texas and southwest with a few 100s in the southwest. Rest of country 70s and 80s.

Houston will be hot and humid with only a slight chance of a thunderstorm. Big low builds into the the midwest by the weekend and that will allow some storms to spin our way.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do summer or verano, pronounced vair-RAH-noh. It really does feel like the end of verano, when you realize the pools are closing.

AND MORE
Took Sarah and some friends to the pool--the last day it is open for the summer. I always get kind of sad because from summer to summer, the kids grow so much and before you know it, they're not little children any more. Seems like yesterday that Megan was a girl--now she has graduated and is on the verge of entering that big world of employment and young adulthood. Forget the housework...embrace the fun outings. These are the things you will remember forever (and so will they).

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
New strong tropical wave has moved off the west coast of Africa. National Hurricane Center gives it between a 30 and 50% chance of developing into a tropical storm. In the Pacific, there is an area with more than a 50% chance of developing into a tropical storm. Next storm name in Atlantic is Fred.

There will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southeast US, the northern Plains and the Ohio Valley on Monday. Warmest spots will be Florida and Texas and the southwest. Most will hit the 90s...some spots in southwest will get to the 100+ range. West coast, northern plains and northeast will have highs in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Houston had a few showers and thunderstorms over last 2 days. Rain chances are only 10 to to 20% on Monday. Highs will be in the 90s. At the end of the week, rain chances increase and there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms and slightly cooler temperatures next weekend. Enjoy the holiday!!!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY

Our poll about when you start getting ready for the Christmas holidays is closed. 51% said they start in December, 16% in November, 16% in September, and 16% year round. No one answered that they start getting ready in October. Thanks to all who participated.

Our new poll is about football season--how do you feel about it? Are you a football widow or widower? More than one answer is allowed. Thanks in advance for partipicpating.

Major excitement for Megan in Vegas tonight...she just met Billy Gilman. Now before you say Billy who?--he was big on the pop scene about 10 years ago. He had a song called One Voice. Megan is probably his number 1 fan!!! And even though I think many of his fans have probably drifted away as he has grown into a young man, Megan has held steadfast in her devotion. He is almost exactly one month older than Megan. Now, one of her lifelong dreams has come true--meeting him face to face. For the past several years, he has been the youth host at the MDA telethon. He'll be performing tonight, 11 pm to midnight and then on Monday co-hosting from 7 to 10 am and then performing again from 1:20 to 2:20 pm. He went through a rough patch when his voice changed, but now it has leveled off and he has found his adult voice. Here's a link to that first famous song from youtube.

Holiday Weekend Forecast/Tropical Update/Velo-cardio facial syndrome

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Erika (Atlantic) and Jimena (Pacific) are now only Remnant lows and The National Hurricane Center is no longer issuing advisories. Both will be rain makers as they meander over the southern Bahamas and the Baja Peninsula respectively. There are 2 other new areas to watch. Other than that, the tropics are fairly quiet as we head into the holiday weekend.

No areas of severe weather designated this Friday or Saturday for the US but much of the south having a change for thunderstorms. The rain has definitely taken an edge off the heat with highs in the 80s and low 90s expected for the southern plains and much of the southwest, except for Vegas which should hit 100 or higher. Nice and mild/cool for the west US coast and the northern states and northeast with highs in the 60s and 70s.

Houston, there was some severe weather late Thursday just to our west and some heavy rain for counties north of here. There will be scattered storms through Monday (especially on Friday and Saturday). So, make your indoor backup plans. The clouds and rain will keep temperatures more moderate...mostly upper 80s and low 90s. Enjoy!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY

Let's do students or estudiantes, pronounced s-stoo-dee-AHN-tehs. We spoke to some medical estudiantes on Thursday. Find out more in the AND MORE section.

I had an email from Teachers Discovery saying, okay, when are you sending our order. Well, of course I was happy to know there was an order, but I had not received one. Finally, I reached my contact and he said...ooooppps, we missed a step. Could you please send us 15 units? Of course, I did right away.

You can order our award winning Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, Volume 1 today from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
On Thursday, Gordy, Megan and I participated in a special program put on by the Baylor Genetics department to educate the new medical students. We and 2 other families spoke to about 150 students about our experience raising a special needs child. Sarah has Smith-Magenis Syndrome and the other two families had represented Williams Syndrome and Velo-Cardio Facial Syndrome. Now, I did not know this but Velo-Cardio Facial Syndrome (VCFS) is the second most common about Down Syndrome. Yet, it took that family a couple years to get a diagnosis even with severe physical problems.

So, here are a couple of links:
http://www.vcfsef.org/
http://vcfstexas.com/

The Texas support group for VCFS is very active thanks to the family which was speaking. In fact Emma, their little girl, is on the front page of the web page.

It was the first time Megan could go with us and I was soooooooooooo proud of her. She talked about her experience being a sibling of a child with SMS. She was very poised in front of all those staring eyes and listening ears. Way to go Megan!!! I think they all enjoyed hearing about how it affects a sibling.

Here's something I had never seen before until recently. I got some new fish oil and there was a flip open top. Wow! I love that...no more unscrewing. With all the supplements/vitamins etc. we take, I figure that if they all had that, I would save 1 minute per day...that would rack up to about 6 hours a year...the things I could do with that 6 hours (like write 6 more blogs Ha!). One can only hope that all the pill manufacturers will all follow that lead.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Hurricane Jimena and Tropical Storm Erika/Ant War Story/Stormy Weekend

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Hurricane Jimena making headlines today as it sets its sights on Baja California. Af of this post, it is still a major hurricane with 115 mph winds. But, it is weakening. It will continue weakening as it makes landfall overnight and moves mostly over land. The remnants of Tropical Depression are almost all gone...NHC stopped issuing advisories today.

Tropical Storm Erika formed in the western Atlantic today. Not a good consensus about where it is going as the Bermuda High is forecast to build westward but the steering currents are weak. NHC is forecasting only slight intensification and then weakening. So, we shall see. Meanwhile, over the eastern Atlantic, there is a new area of disturbed weather.

Very pleasant with a hint of fall over the eastern US. On Wednesday, 90s and 100s with be over south Texas and the west (except for immediate west coast). Florida will have highs in the 80s with some thunderstorms. Elsewhere, highs will be in the 70s.

Houston's high on Tuesday was only 85!!! Now that's the way to start September!! The high on Monday was 87. We did have a day with highs in the 80s on the last day of July. Prior to that it was early June when highs were only in the 80s. Looks like scattered storms will return on Friday and there will be some Saturday and Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do ant or hormiga, pronounced or-MEE-gah. Do you have an hormiga problem? See one story in the AND MORE section.

Placed our order for the 2nd volume today! Will let know when they are ready for ordering. In the meantime, order our award winning Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, Volume 1. AND MORE
If you live on the southwest side of Houston, I'm just wondering if you know about Highway 90...this is a super fast and easy way to get to the medical center. Takes 5 to 10 minutes off your commute depending on the time of day. Just thought I'd pass that along.

I put out some more of the pepperminty bug insecticide. Lots of dead ants now. Speaking of ants, I'm reminded of my childhood. Guess one time when I was staying at my Grandma Gearhart's, there were actually ants in the cottage cheese. I was horrified. When I told Grandma, she said "ah, that's okay...ants are good for you...they give you protein". I don't think I ate it even then. That Grandma was a character...true pioneer woman. So down to earth--nothing fancy--all about surviving. Her husband (my grandpa) was an entrepreneur and super outgoing. Even though he made a fortune, she didn't want any luxuries. They always lived in a simple house...not ostentatious at all. Poor Grandpa wanted to spend some money on her. But whenever he did, he was severely chastised. She didn't want or need anything. She was quite a character--kind of reminded me of granny on Beverly Hillbillies (although my Grandma was taller) and I don't remember being fed possum. She did cook good basic food--spaghetti with lots of butter, baked chicken--everything always yummy.

So, if you get an ant attack--remember don't kill 'em, eat'em--lots of protein!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
