HOUSTON WINTER STORM WARNING UNTIL 8 PM FRI. - update

The National Weather Service is maintaining Winter Storm Warning until 8 pm today (Friday). 3 to 4 inch snow accumulations are possible with 1 to 2 inch accumulations common.

Everyone has noticed so far this a.m. the rain and snow mix. As some dry air moves into the area, there will be evaporative cooling and that will cool the air to freezing by late afternoon. This will allow accumulations. It is going to be a tricky commmute home. I think most of the school pickups will work out (3 pm pickups) but after that the snow will start accumulating.

Rapid drying after 9 pm with a clear morning and freezing temperatures ahead. Be careful to watch for icey spots if you are driving overnight and early Saturday (even though the snow will have been over for many hours).

Protect your pets and plants. There will be 10 to 12 hours of freezing temperatures for much of the area with about 3 to 6 hours near the coast and 5 to 9 in Houston. The only areas staying above freezing will be the immediate coast and Galveston.

Be safe everyone.
