Jet Stream Keeps Weather Changing/More Fun to Give Than to Receive

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
A few severe storms are possible on Wednesday in a circle which includes Oklahoma, Arkansas and a little piece of Texas. The jet stream is overall sagging southward with a series of small waves rippling along it. These will cause frequent but minor changes in the weather for the lower 1/2 of the country. Everywhere to the north will be dealing with fairly cool weather for about a week.

On Wednesday, look for a few snow/rain showers over the Great Lakes and northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest. There will be some thunderstorms in the extreme southeast.

Houston will be very pleasant, starting in 40s and ending up in the 70s. Clouds return by late afternoon. A few showers are possible Tuesday as the next weak front approaches and moves through. Weekend looks warm (highs in the low 80s) with a shower or two possible.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do school students or escolares, pronounces ehs-coh-lar-EHS. I have some wonderful escolares in my CCE class.

I have always loved children and that is part of the inspiration for my awarding winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. I think like a kid and want to play at their level. And I think that is why our DVD is so successful--it's at their level--it has what they like. So, don't miss out on this fun way to teach Spanish to your little ones. AND MORE
Today, the students in my 1st grade religion class put together bags of goodies for refugee families that our parish has adopted. It was so fun for them to take the kinds of things they love and give them to others. I think back to what I remember from 1st grade and it really is a self-absorbed time. That's why we do these kinds of projects--of course it is also the right thing to do. But it helps kids become more aware of the needs and lives of others. They begin to think of others instead of only themselves. I wish you all could have been there to see the joy on their faces. It was such a neat sight.

From the not observant mommy department, I got all the way to the church only to realize that Sarah had gotten in the car with no shoes or socks. Now realize that I should have noticed as I buckled her up but did I? Nooooooooooooooooooo! So, I loaned her my socks (I was wearing boots)--oooooh, I don't like wearing shoes without socks but I couldn't have her in bare feet). And she walked around in socks for the entire class period. Thank goodness I was wearing boots/socks and not sandles.

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone and don't forget your shoes.

Severe Threat/Poll Results/New Poll

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
A line of severe storms is moving across Oklahoma as I write this, this evening. In the morning, those storms will be pushing into the northern Gulf states. Look for rain and thunderstorms from Texas to New Orleans northward to Kentucky. There will showers and sometimes snow across the Pacific Northwest, northern Intermountain Region, western Great Lakes and northern New England. Warmest weather will be across the southeast (ahead of the front) with highs in the 80s.

Houston will have a line of showers and thunderstorms move through during the morning. By mid-afternoon, the skies should be clearing. Look for another round of rain on Thursday after a sunny start to Wednesday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do makeup or maquillarse, pronounced mah-key-YAR-say. The woman liked to try new colors of maquillarse, especially lipsticks.

The puppets Frank and Paco in our award winning DVD, Let' Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, did not have to wear makeup, but they did have a lot of props. That is part of the fun and one of the reasons children like to watch the video so much. Order your copy today from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
Our poll on high heel shoes is now closed. 50% think wearing high heels is one of the best ways to look attractive. 16% said they are too painful. 33% said wearing high heels keeps podiatrists in business. 16% said high heels are worth the pain. No one said the higher the better or it hurts to look at them. Now, here is something I found out from my podiatrist...wearing high heels caused the padding in the ball of my foot to slip forward into an unnatural position. Note that more than one answer was allowed. Thanks to all of you who participated.

Our new poll has to do with the current administration's handling of the automobile manufacturers. Only one answer is allowed.

This comes from the "Out of the Mouths of Babes Department". Most of you have never seen me without makeup. But I can tell you that I look very different. It's kind of like Cecilia and then Wonder Weather Woman--the are so different! Thank goodness Gordy has poor vision now. Ha! Anyway, tonight after I took off my makeup, Sarah looked at me and said, "You don't look like Mommy" and I asked her if she meant because I wasn't wearing makeup and she said yes. Yikes...and for so long she was blissfully unaware (either that or she couldn't vocalize it).

All I can say is thank goodness for makeup!

Have a safe Tuesday everyone.

Weather to Start the Week/Have Things Changed?/SMG Success

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Some rain/thunderstorms return to the plains and lower Mississippi Valley on Monday. There will also be some rain/snow in northern New England and in the northern Rockies. Most of the northern tier of states will have highs in the 30s. The southern tier will be in the 70s and 80s.

Houston will turn cloudy during the afternoon on Monday. Highs will be in the 70s. There will be some showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday as a weak cold front moves through the area.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do weather or tiempo, pronounced tee-EHM-poh. The tiempo in Houston today was just gorgeous. Note, tiempo is also the word for time.

Well don't let the time tick away on your youngster's childhood. This is the optimal time for language learning--especially before the age of 8--the age at which 80% of the neurological pathways have formed.. AND MORE
I don't get a chance to watch much TV...I prefer reading (and I don't have much time for that). But this morning, as Sarah checked out her favorite Internet sites, Megan studied at her mom's and Gordy rested a sore back, I had the decadent pleasure of reading for several hours. Did I mention we went to mass yesterday evening? Well, I am reading this fascinating book about 2 Chinese sisters. One decides to become a medical doctor and earns a scholarship to come to the US (in the 1930s). This is based on a true story. Her husband, another doctor, is hired by Eli Lilly himself to develop various medicines using materials from other countries. The husband developed ephedrine. Anyway, it is fascinating to read about what these women endured to get their careers. Then tonight, I did watch The #1 Ladies Detective Agency on HBO. It is a series based on the popular book series of the same title. I had read one of those books and just loved it. The setting is Botswana Africa but the stories are relatable to all of us.

When I went to college, Texas A & M rolled out the red carpet for me. I think they wanted more young ladies in their meteorology program. But I was a bit put off when the advisor snickered about me getting a husband and what nought. My mother was with me. She was my biggest fan and advocate. Do you remember that little conversation Mom? But back then, we just laughed and tried to move on to what we were trying to accomplish--not taking taking exception to what had been said.

When I first started in the work force, I took a job as a secretary at a CPA firm. They were using typewriters. I became the one who selected a word processor to use--I picked Wordperfect at the time. We loved our word processors! When I moved back to Houston, I took a job at a turn key computer/software company. The boss frequently mused aloud about married female employees---they probably want to have a baby--saying it in a very disgusted and disdainful way. You didn't dare talk about babies or even the thought of having babies. That was a big no-no. The bosses didn't want to hear about it!

Anyway, I wonder if things have changed much. Any thoughts you wish to share?

P.S. Congratulations to Frank Brody, Doris Rotzoll Hood and the fine folks at the NASA Space Flight Meteorology Group for forecasting the tricky weather Saturday and helping make the shuttle landing a success!

Have a great week everyone!

Weekend Weather/High Heels/Doctors in Short Supply

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
There were 20 tornadoes in the US on Friday including one in Hardin, TX. But the big story for folks in and around Houston was the large hail. One report was baseball sized hail just west of Conroe. Yikes!!! And how about that freaky snow in the panhandle of TX and in OK.

The severe weather this Saturday will be across the southeast. There have already been several reports of severe weather this am in the southeast. This am there is snow in Oklahoma and Kansas. What month is it?! Look for snow in Kansas City today and on Sunday the snow will move into the Ohio Valley and upper midwest. On Sunday the severe weather will be along the eastern seaboard with some snow and rain across the Great Lakes. There will also be showers in the Pacific Northwest on Saturday and then snow/rain in the northern Rockies on Sunday.

Houston--what a difference a day makes...cool, sunny and windy today. Then on Sunday, absolutely gorgeous with sunshine, lows in the 40s and highs in the 70s. Rain moves through on Tuesday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do surprise or sorpresa, pronounced sore-PREH-sah. There was a sorpresa on Friday when it snowed in the panhandle of Texas.

AND MORE
Our latest poll (about women's high heels) ends Monday evening. It's been pushed way down because of the need to prioritize severe weather graphics. Now, it is at the top. So check it out!

My mother and father in-law ended a visit with us on Wednesday. I had to laugh because my father-in-law seemed to attract the animals at the Bayou Wildlife Park more than anyone else in our group. He had had a bad experience with a spitting camel that visiting the St. Albert's schools where he works in Council Bluffs, Iowa. So, he was a bit nervous when this guy at the Bayou Wildlife Park was a little too friendly and persistent.

An endocrinologist I know said her network of endo. doctors is about 700. She said they really need about twice that number. She offered this information after I told her it had taken us a long time to get into to see her for Sarah. I found this information intriguing and troubling. As far as I understand the American Medical Association limits the number of doctors. I can tell you from personal experience that we often have very long lead times for getting Sarah into see various specialists. We're talking several months. And whoa to you if you have to reschedule for some reason. It is very stressful for parents.

Well, we're off to Sarah's Dream League games.

Have a great weekend!

Severe Storm Threat Update

Happy Friday everyone -
Storm Prediction Center has placed a somewhat circular area from east Texas across northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas into eastern Mississippi at a moderate risk for severe weather through 6 am Saturday.

There could be supercell storms which produce tornadoes and damaging winds as well as large hail. Threat for east Texas will be in the early to mid-afternoon. Threat for locations further east will be into the evening hours.

Look for winds to pick up and temperatures to drop after the front passes. Many areas will be under wind advisories.

Please send this update to your friends and family.

Storms in central TX as of 5 pm this Friday evening are prompting Tornado Warnings. The northern half of southeast TX is now under a Tornado Watch until 8 am this Wed. evening. The watch means conditions are favorable for storms which produce tornadoes. The southern half is not included in the watch because the warm frontal boundary has moved to the north of Houston.

Another round of severe weather is likely on Thursday (mainly afternoon into early evening). This one has the potential to have more widespread and more southern impacts.

I'll update as necessary.

Warning! Tornadoes a Threat Today (Wed. 3/25)

Hello everyone -
Just a quick update...2 things I want to bring to your attention.
1. It looks more likely now that supercell storms could form (which could produce tornadoes) particularly this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center is considering upgrading our threat to a moderate one (moderate is more serious than a slight risk).
2. There will be another round of severe storms on Thursday (and possibly Friday).

I'll try to update later today.
If a tornado threatens, move to an interior room or closet on the 1st floor away from glass doors and windows.

Severe Threat in Texas/Poll Results/New Poll

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
As I write this evening, there have been 7 reports of tornadoes in the plains and dozens of reports of large hail and damaging winds. On Tuesday the threat for severe weather moves east and south into Texas all the way to Illinois. Main threat will be large hail and high wind, but tornadoes can't be ruled out. It will be cool in the northeast, northern plains and northwest with highs in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Highs will be in the 70s and 80s across the southern tier of states. There will be showers over the northern Rockies and the Pacific Northwest and northern New England and some thunderstorms in Florida.

Houston will be cloudy and breezy with highs in the 70s. There will be some showers, possibly some severe storms mainly north of Houston. Thunderstorms will be possible into Saturday when the next front moves through and brings back the sunshine and lower humidity.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do shoe or zapato, pronounced zah-PAH-toe. What do you think about high heeled zapatos? You can voice your opinion in our new poll.

I think Spanish is fun...just think about the word zapato...it's fun to say. Spanish is also fairly easy to learn because it is so phonetic. And better yet, children enjoy it and learn it faster, because they have the advantages of a youthful brain. AND MORE
Our spring break plans poll is closed. 16% said they would go to the rodeo and 16% said they would go to the beach. 33% said they would take a trip and 33% said they would visit family. 50% said they would spend time with friends. 33% said they would shop. 50% said they would relax. 83% said they would work. 16% said they would study. No one said they would go snow skiing, visit the zoo, or go to museum. Multiple answers were allowed. Thanks for participating.

Did a little shopping tonight at Dillard's with family. I was astounded as the sales attendant told me which super high heeled Jessica Simpson shoes were the biggest sellers. He said the floral patterned one wasn't but a glossy, brown and black shoe was a huge hit. He also pointed out a brown strappy shoe with front zipper that was adored. He said the glossy fuschia with open toe was a big success, and there was a blue crushed suede number that did well too. All I could think was ow, ow, ow because they all had super high heels (and I hope my hubby doesn't mind that I just can't handle those shoes). What do you think? Answer my new poll about high heeled shoes. You can choose multiple answers. Have fun! (Please go down a bit on the right to see the poll--because of the severe weather threat, I am putting the weather items higher).

Severe Threat/Rodeo Wrapup/Kemah Better Than Ever!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Heads up for the threat of severe weather over the plains, especially north, central Oklahoma and south central Kansas. There will likely be large hail and tornadoes and high winds are also a threat. It will be cooler across the Rockies with highs in the 40s (cooler in the higher elevations). It will be chilly in the northeast with highs in the 20s and 30s...warm across the south and southeast with highs in the 70s and 80s.

Houston will be mostly cloudy, warm and breezy on Monday. Thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening as the next front approaches. But the upper pattern will get somewhat stuck, keeping Houston in a moist flow until at least Saturday when a front finally moves through and clears the skies and brings back some lower humidity.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY

This was the last weekend of the Houston rodeo. Every year it seems to get better and better. We had a wonderful time Saturday and really enjoyed the rodeo and performance by Brooks and Dunn, who included a touching tribute to our nation's military. We parked in the Smithland parking lot north of the stadium...cost $10. Then, we rode the free buses to the rodeo. On the way back we took the light rail, which was also free. And it was very quick...much faster than waiting in line for the buses. This is one of the best ways to go!

Today we went down to Kemah. It is hard to tell that a hurricane ravaged the area just 6 months ago. The rides were working. The playground was still being replaced. Store owners there tell me it will be ready in a month and this time it will have running water...keeping the little ones nice and cool. The Merry-Go-Round was replaced by a 2 level one...very nice!!! The stingray interactive exhibit is not reopened yet. We ate at Landry's and it was just like old times!

Have a great week everyone!

Weekend Forecast/Spring Equinox/Bayou Wildlife Park

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Happy 1st day of Spring...according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, it began at 6:44 am (central standard time) today, Friday, March 20th. It is the spring equinox, the date in the Northern Hemisphere when the length of night and day are approximately the same (12 hours). The length of daylight will now be more than the length of night and will continue to increase until the summer solstice in June.

Pleasant weather across most of the country on Saturday...in the 70s and 80s across the south and 30s and 40s in the northeast. There will be some rain/thunderstorms across the plains and along the west coast and in the Intermountain region.

Houston will be partly sunny with highs near 80. Sunday will be more windy and still mild. Look for thunderstorms Tuesday into early Wednesday.

We made it to the Bayou Wildlife Park today...a fun but different experience from the last time we were there. The park was started 25 years ago by a husband and wife team. The owner is very proud of his giraffes. He told us he purchased one for 70 thousand dollars and was thrilled that it gave birth several months after arriving. He said he got 2 for the price of one. My guests were skeptical about whether it would be worthwhile (at $16 for adults and $8 for children). But afterward, they told me it was a neat experience. My step-daughter Megan (see photo) was able to join us. She got a kick out of feeding the various animals that popped their heads into our buckets. This one in the photo is a 2 humped camel. They can go 30 days without water. She also got to feed an ostrich and a wildebeest. A great time was had by all. The animals weren't super hungry this time. The workers said they had been mobbed by visitors all through spring break. They said the animals were nice and full.

I did not think I had to as we weren't even selling a product during that year. But since I had formed the company in May 2007, I had to file a report to say zero income. I also needed to file a report about officers of the company...one has of these reports has to be filled out every year. I thought I only needed to file once and then refile if there were changes. HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Still nice and warm for the southern 2/3rds of the country...some 90s in Arizona on Thursday. Cool spot will be the U.P. of Michigan with highs in the 20s and some snow showers. Look for some rain/possibly a few thunderstorms in central Texas and in the southeast--see Storm Prediction Center map at right.

Houston has a Dense Fog Advisory until 10 am Thursday. A weak cold front will graze by the area early Friday. Pressure gradient will tighten and it will get very breezy over the weekend. Temperatures will be cool in the mornings and mild to warm in the afternoons. Look for some showers as early as Sunday with most likely day (s) being Tuesday/Wednesday.

We had such a good time at NASA's Space Center Houston today...I had been promising Sarah a visit during Spring Break. It was very busy but worth the trip. I don't know how long the kid's playground has been there, but it is the tallest I have ever seen. And there is another big slide outside the restricted kids' play area that Sarah and I went down 3 times. Sarah doesn't like to watch any movies but we still found enough to keep us occupied for 4 hours straight. By the way, that diving act from Orlando is amazing. There is a photo of it on the front page of today's (Wednesday 3/18) Houston Chronicle. That act is outside the dining area.

One of the problems which tends to occur with Sarah's syndrome is low immunoglobulin levels. Well we got some very good news today!!! She has responded amazingly well to her last immune system booster...a pneumonia vaccine called pneumovax. All of her immune levels for about 10 different types of pneumonia are up dramatically. The immunologist did caution that she could develop lower levels of resistance over time. So, we will monitor. Children who have the type of chromosomal deletion which Sarah has, are short one of 2 alleles used for fighting bacteria. Researchers are very interested in the immune system response of children with Sarah's pattern of deletion because it helps them determine what exactly that 2nd allele (Smith-Magenis Syndrome children have) does. Thus, by exclusion they get information on what the deleted allele does. So, in short, children with SMS are like celebrities to immunologists (and highly sought after). For more on SMS, go to prisms.org.

Some thoughts on Natasha Richardson (wife of Liam Neeson), dead as a result of a ski injury--she was one of my favorite actresses. I first saw her in a troubling movie called The Hand Maids' Tale...check it out if you get a chance.

Keeping up the nice weather/Fun and Inexpensive Things to Do on Break

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Most of the country is very spring like and will be that way on Wednesday. There will be plenty of 70 and 80s across the southern 2/3 of the country. Look for some thunderstorms from eastern Oklahoma to western New York state. There could also be some showers in Florida. Enjoy!

Houston is under a Dense Fog Advisory until 11 am Wednesday morning. Fog and low clouds will take some time to lift but look forward to another sunny afternoon with highs in the upper 70s. Weather will stay mild to warm through the weekend. It will be breezy Saturday and Sunday with a few showers possible.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY

Let's do museum or museo, pronounced moo-SAY-oh. Hey, have you checked out The John C. Freeman weather museum in the museum district? I'll tell you when you and kids can there for free!!! See the And More section.

I am a huge advocate for early language learning. Some of the free ways to do that are check out Spanish videos and books from your local library. And for not too much money, you can order our award winning DVD for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Order from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. Sarah and I were invited by our friend Lyn to check out the Hong Kong mall today. It was absolutely fascinating and very easy to find. It is on Bellaire about 1 mile west of Beltway 8. Inside, you will find groceries, shops, and eateries. Couldn't resist buying this pink parasol for Sarah--price $4.

I have a question for all of you. We are attending a weekend rodeo show. I got a notice which posts the time as 3:45. Does that mean the concert starts at 3:45 or the rodeo? Anyone know? Would appreciate your help on this one.

Have fun and be safe everyone!

Will It Stay Dry?/Who Was St. Patrick?/Poll Results/New Poll

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
A very nice Tuesday for most of the country...some rain early in Boston and some showers in the Florida. Also there could be thunderstorms from eastern Iowa into Michigan. Look for rain the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies (snow in the higher elevations). All non-mountainous locations should be above freezing. It will be in the 70s and 80s in the central and southern plains and from the southwest to the southeast.

Houston will be mostly sunny...starting out near 50 and ending up in the upper 70s. There will be a gradual warmup and increase in humidity as the week progresses. It will be breezy on Sunday. Rain chances will remain very low through Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do luck or suerte, pronounced SWEAR-tay. How about some suerte of the Irish on St. Patrick's Day?

There will be lots of green on St. Patrick's Day. We are working on Volumes 2 and 3 of our DVD series DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco and in Volume 3, we have colors including green!!! In the meantime, you can order the award winning Volume 1 from www.frankandpaco.com/ and you'll have it by mid-week. For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, got to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
Our poll on favorite fruit closed...here are the percentages for top picks: 14% apples, 14% oranges, 14% grapes, 28% strawberries, 14% pears and 14% watermelon. No one picked banana, blueberries, pineapple, peaches, cantaloupes, kiwi, or cherries as a favorite. Thanks for participating.

Our new poll is about what you are doing this Spring Break. You can pick more than one answer. Have fun!

Since Tuesday is St. Patrick's Day, I am including a link to the New Advent web site with a long biographical discussion about St. Patrick. One thing I learned is that he was from Britain and only initially ended up in Ireland because he was captured and made a slave there for 6 years. He lived in the 300s and 400s (AD). He did come up with the idea of the Trinity (God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) but the whole shamrock connnection is debatable. Also, according to the account on this link, he was an amazing 106 years old at death. Some might consider that lucky!!! Anyway, enjoy the read.

Happy 5th birthday to Gabriella! She had a popstar theme on Saturday. Her Mom made the cool microphone cupcakes at right. This is a fun project to do with your kids during spring break. To make these, you mix up cupcake mix like usual. Then pour into cake type ice cream cones until about 2/3 full. Bake amount of time on cupcake instructions. Note, the cones won't burn. Cool and frost/decorate as desired. I think the hardest part is balancing them--I put each one in a muffin tin, placing them on the tray already on the rack in the oven. Gabriella's mom Mollie rocks--she always makes the coolest birthday party treats!

Have a safe and fun spring break everyone!

Spring Break Forecast/Mingle with the Wildlife on Spring Break

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
A spring break thaw for the entire continental U.S. (at least this weekend). The coldest areas will be along the northern states with highs in the 30s. There will be rain in the southeast and Texas and rain in the western states. By early in the week, jet stream has moved back up northern along the northern tier of states and that is primarily where the coolest temperatures and showers will be.

Houston will start to warm up a bit. Highs on Saturday will be in the 50s and highs on Sunday will be in the 60s. Then, expect highs in the 70s Monday through Friday. It will rain a bit on Saturday with rain more likely on Sunday as a weak cold front makes a glancing blow...enough to clear us out. A few showers are possible late in the week...but don't cancel any outdoor plans.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do park or parque, pronounced PAR-kay. I am going to tell you about a fascinating park in the And More section.

Here's an idea for a fun and educational Easter gift...our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Order your copy today from www.frankandpaco.com/. Looking for something fun to do on spring break. Take your youngsters to the Bayou Wildlife Park. Even wetter/Weather and Migraines/Drink Tap Water!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Interesting changes temperature-wise over the U.S. On Friday, temperatures will be moderated in many locations...either cooler or warmer than a few days ago. It is making the temperature distribution a lot more even...Florida will be the exception with highs in the 80s. But there will be many locations with the highs in the 30s, 40s and 50s. California will have highs in the 60s. There will be rain and some thunderstorms in Texas and Louisiana as well as in New Mexico and Arizona. There will also be some rain in DC through the Ozarks and Tennessee Valley.

Houston will be cold and wet--very damp. Temperatures won't get out of the 40s. Should see some spots with 1/2 to 1 inch of rain. Saturday will be cool and cloudy with some light rain...highs in the 50s. Sunday will still be cloudy but warmer with highs close to 60. Monday through Friday there will be sunshine...lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s. So, go ahead and make those outdoor spring break plans!!!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do damp or húmedo, pronounced OOH-may-dough. It is so húmedo outside.

I spoke to the West Houston Chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. about the benefits of early language learning. While I spoke, I played (quietly) our award winning video. The moms couldn't help but notice how the little ones were drawn to it. Afterward, they were sure to order a copy to take home. You too can get in on the fun and learning--Order your copy today from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. AND MORE
At the Mocha Mom's meeting this morning, there was also a pediatric dentist giving a presentation. I was happy that I knew most of the tips, but here is something I had never thought of. They encouraged giving kids tap water instead of filtered or bottled, because you know that the tap water has fluoride and the kids need that for their teeth. I will keep that in mind when Sarah gets water.

Big thanks to Dave Gorham for sending me this link from NPR. Weather does correlate with higher reports of migraines...in particular extreme temperature increases...check it out for yourself. Thanks Dave!!! P.S. I didn't know 20% of women and 5% of men have migraines...that's a lot of bad headaches.

Wet and Cold/Spring Break Forecast/Franchise Tax Frustration

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Rain is moving across Texas and parts of the south. There will be more rain in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee on Thursday. Still warm in Florida with highs in the 80s but substantially cooler in the southern plains and midwest. California will be quite pleasant with highs in the 60s.

Houston is in for a wet and chilly Thursday...highs will barely make 50. Friday will be wet and cold with highs in the upper 40s. Saturday will also be wet and chilly. Sunday, rain ends and the spring break week looks sunny, dry and mild. Yay!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do mistake or error, pronounced AIR-roar. Be sure to roll the rr. I am frustrated by an error made by the Texas Comptroller's office electronic tax filing system.

I just don't like errors one bit. That is why when we created our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, we first put together a team of language experts. If you want to have the correct pronunciation, you need to start language at a young age. You can be sure the pronunciation in our DVDs are error free. Order your's today from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, got to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
So, now I am getting ominous letters from the state comptroller's office. I filed my franchise tax return last May (not owing anything) but failed to print the confirmation #. They had no record and in December sent me a letter with a penalty and demand to file (they said I never filed). So I refiled...this time making sure to print out the return and get a confirmation #. Today, I get a very ominous letter saying I never filed and that they are going to take away my business' registration. At least they are giving me until June 29th to fix it. But I am so annoyed! I plan to personally take this to the nearest office and file it. Wish me luck in getting this straightened out. Grrrrr!!!

Be safe tomorrow everyone!

Cold Snap/Spring Break Outlook/Do this for your yard now!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Thunderstorms will fire along and ahead of an approaching cold front on Wednesday. Focal point for rain/thunderstorms will be in Arkansas/Oklahoma/Texas. Many places in the south and southeast which have enjoyed warm weather will experience a substantial dip in temperatures for a few days. On Wednesday, highs in North Dakota will only be in the single digits. There will be some snow around the Great Lakes and northern New England and some showers in New York and Boston.

Houston will start mild on Wednesday. Rain begins in the late morning. Heaviest rain will be in the mid to late afternoon as cold front arrives. Expect a much cooler day on Thursday--lows in the 40s and highs in the 50s. Clouds and rain will hang around through Saturday. Look for another round of heavy downpours on Saturday. Highs through Saturday will only be in the 50s. Sunday, sunshine returns and spring break week will be spectacular...lots of sunshine!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do rabbit or conejo, pronounced cone-NAY-ho. The conejos are starting to appear again.

Nature is a wonder and kids have a natural curiosity about it. They are also very curious and excited about learning languages. And, if they do learn other languages, their brain development is enhanced. So, order our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. They'll learn and have fun at the same time. You can order your's today from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, got to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
It's time to put out the weed and feed. Don't delay! Pick some up today and spread over your yard...this is perfect timing with the rain coming in. The weed part will keep weeds out of your lawn until fall. I am always amazed when I see people with weeds growing like crazy in their yards. It is so unnecessary. Just use this product, and you won't be sorry. In the fall...October...you need to apply winterizer. That helps prevent weeds from emerging in the spring.

We like to walk along Oyster Creek Trail. One poor lady walking her dog was really straining. The dog had a wild look it it's eyes. She said "He wants to catch all of them". Yep...it's those rascally rabbits and they are out again! But don't worry folks...spring is going to go on hiatus for a few days here as we get a little cold snap.

Have a safe Wednesday everyone!

It's Going to Get Wet/Poll Results/New Poll/A Healthy Trick

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Severe weather threatens the midwest on Tuesday. Most likely type of severe weather is hail. It will be bitterly cold in North Dakota and Montana with some locations not even making it to zero. Nice and warm across the south and southeast, ahead of an approaching cold front. There will be many locations with highs in the 80s. Look for snow from the western Great Lakes across the northern plains and into the Rockies.

Houston will be balmy again. But cold front is on the way...will arrive Wednesday afternoon. Could be a couple thunderstorms before it passes but greatest threat of storms will be to the north. Rain is even more likely at the end of the week and into the first half of the weekend. There could be 1 to 3 inches in spots. I think the wettest day will be Friday. Temperatures will be in the 50s Thursday, Friday and possibly Saturday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do fruit or fruta, pronounced FROO-tah. What is your favorite fruta? Answer today's blog.

Fruta is one of the words introduced in our award winning Volume 1 DVD for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Children love to eat...so they really find the Eating and Drinking chapter very interesting. The first volume has chapters on home/family, eating/drinking and play.

AND MORE
The poll about what you will do if you lose your job...is closed. 20% said they would collect unemployment. 40% said they would change careers. 20% said they would take any job they could find. 40% said this does not apply as they are self-employed. No one said they would go back to school or live off of savings. More than one answer was allowed. Thanks to all of you who participated.

Our new poll is more light hearted. Remember how we did a poll about your favorite vegetable (and green beans won by a big margin)? Well, now I want to know what you favorite fruit is. Only one answer is allowed. Enjoy!

Eating healthy is in the news every day. But let me just tell you that while I enjoy whole grain breads, I do not particularly care for whole grain pasta or pancake mixes. Well here's how I get around it. Mix half whole grain with half regular. So when I cook spaghetti (actually we prefer angel hair), I cook half whole wheat and half regular. You almost can't tell there is any of the whole wheat stuff. Try it! You can do the same with pancake mixes...half whole wheat/half regular. And on the mixes, if you want one more good fiber, add a cup or two of cooked oatmeal. It will blend right in...no need to adjust the recipe. Happy healthy cooking!

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Cooler Weather Coming/Dream League Big Success/Holi Days

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
A big contrast in conditions across the nation Monday as very cold air sits over the northern Rockies and northern Plains. Highs in parts of Montana and North Dakota will be in the single digits. There will be snow showers in these areas and rain in the Pacific Northwest. Over the southeast, south, lots of warm temperatures...many locations in the 80s. Look out for severe storms in parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Missouri.

Houston--Last week at this time, it was cool and dry. Today, was very much spring weather...warm and muggy with a bit of breeze if you were in an open area. Look for more warm weather on Monday...some storms on Tuesday as the next cold front approaches. Temperatures drop Wednesday and biggest line of storms passes. It will be cool with showers on and off into the early part of the coming week (the beginning of spring break).

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do color or color, pronounced coh-LORE. There was a lot of color at the park today (see And More section to learn more).

We are busy editing the next volumes of our DVDs for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Volume 3 will have colors as well as alphabets and number. The first volume has chapters on home/family, eating/drinking and play. It has won 2 major awards. You can order your's today from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
Saturday was the opening ceremonies for this year's Dream League games. I have to tell you that I was so impressed with how big a deal was made of it all. The Houston Astros provided a very professional announcer. Every child was given a nickname...Sarah's is Sarah Pure Speed. And all the kids had a fantastic time. There are no outs, everyone makes a homerun every time they come up to bat, and every game ends in a tie. And the smiles on their faces were just priceless!!! That's Coach Lambert giving direction to the runners on base and in the foreground, one of Sarah's angels cheering her on. Thanks so much to everyone who makes it happen. Sarah had a wonderful time and can't wait to play in the next game.

So, we're driving down Highway 6 in Sugar Land, passing Oyster Creek Park, and there is a huge backup as a long line of cars is turning into the parking area. People are parking in all the grassy areas. It is packed!!! We are wondering--what could be going on? This crowd almost looks bigger than the one on the 4th of July. So, we headed home and walked on over. We see all these people with bright colors on the faces, in their hair and on their clothes. So, we ask some of them what is going on. They tell us it is the Holi Days, Festival of Colors, kind of a celebration of spring. So, I looked it up and found that this is celebrated on the first full moon of March. The young people really seemed to be having fun. They told us the colors wash off very easily. It certainly was a spring day--very warm and muggy but there was a breeze. I found an interesting web site if you would like to learn more.

Weekend Weather/What You Don't Know about Daylight Saving Time

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Jet stream is tilting more to the right...Kansas and Missouri and southern Iowa will be the focal point for severe weather on Saturday. Greatest threat will be large hail. But there could be a few tornadoes. On Sunday, the severe threat shifts eastward and includes Illinois. On Saturday, there will be showers and thunderstorms from Oklahoma to Illinois. There will be a few snow/rain showers over the northern Rockies and northern Plains. Highs will be in the 20s and 30s across the northern tier of states while all of the south will be in the 70s and 80s. From DC to Cincinnati and southward, highs will be in the 70s...a spectacular weekend for the south and southeast.

Houston will be breezy and warm over the weekend. Rain is not likely until the middle of the coming week. Enjoy!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's day sunrise or amanecer, pronounced ah-mah-neh-SAIR. Read my "And More" section to find out how early the sun would rise if it weren't for Daylight Saving Time.

One of the wonderful things about kids is their boundless energy (time change or not). And their minds really are like sponges, especially when it comes to language learning. So, give them best--they'll enjoy it and you'll know you've done something really good for them--order our award winning DVD for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, got to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
This is your final reminder that the time change is coming this weekend!!! You will spring forward one hour (move the clocks ahead one hour) before you go to bed Saturday night.

Now, here is something that is keeping me awake at night. Should it be called Daylight Saving Time or Daylight Savings Time. I consulted 3 calendars--they all said Daylight Savings Time. Yet, I know it is Daylight Saving Time. A previous boss once sent out a stern note that it is Daylight Saving Time--say it right dad gummit!!! But somehow saying Savings just feels more comfortable. What do you think?

Well, anyway, National Geographic News says that Hawaii, Arizona, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not observe Daylight Saving Time. According to the same source, it has been shown to increase energy savings while decreasing the number of traffic accidents, traffic fatalities and crimes.

Now consider this...if we did not make this time change, then in the month of June, the sun would rise at 5:20 am in Houston and at 4:25 am in New York!!! Yikes!!! Okay. Maybe I can handle this time change.

Got my spring allergy shot today. So, in 10 years, when I'm playing some professional sport, you can say that you knew I was using steroids! I only get this shot once a year, but boy do I need it. Once that oak pollen gets going, I'm a goner (unless I've had the shot). I know some people who are so severely affected that they actually leave town for a couple weeks. You can check allergy levels (as measured in the medical center area), by calling 713-247-5846.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Warm Weather-How Long?/Wonder Waste Woman

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Still warm for much of the country on Friday, but there is chilly air over the northern Rockies. Montana highs will be in the teens and 20s. There will be snow over the Rockies and western Great Lakes. There will be showers in South Dakota and Oregon.

Houston will continue with its spring balminess from now through the middle of the coming week. Showers will be more likely starting Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do waste or desperdicio, pronounced dehs-per-dee-SEE-oh. Try to recycle and not make desperdicio.

Not enhancing a child's mind to the fullest is certainly a waste. By the age of 8, 80% of neurological development has occurred and one of the best ways to enhance that development is through language learning. I used to work in the Air Quality field as an Air Dispersion Meteorologist. My sister, Julie, worked in the water and solid waste side of the environmental world. Now, she and her husband are leading experts on how to get rid of dangerous waste. She works for a small sector of the government that is getting sources of radioactive materials (so attractive to terrorists) out of other countries. She frequently testifies in D.C. before The Department of Homeland Security.
I call my sister, Julie Whitworth, Wonder Waste Woman. Together, we make an unbeatable team!!!

Check out this article about her team.

Nice Warmup Everywhere/Dream League is Dream Come True!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER

The country is enjoying a nice warm-up...of course it's more for some of us. But it is all relative. 35 degrees is a lot more bearable than zero.

The west coast storm will have shifted eastward on Thursday. There will be snow and rain from the Intermountain Region into the northern plains and northern Great Lakes states. The coolest spot will be northern Maine with highs in the 20s. The south will be in the 70s and 80s.

Houston will be partly to mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s. The mild weather will continue into Tuesday. Look for rain over the weekend, with the highest chance being on Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY

Let's do dream or sueño, pronounce swen-NYO. I had a very nice sueño.

In Volume 2, one chapter will be about a child's day. It will have terms for waking up and going to sleep (hopefully to dream nice sueños). Until that is complete, you can order our award winning DVD for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, Volume 1, from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. AND MORE

Today, Sarah had her first (and only) Dream League practice. It was the neatest thing. These special teams are assisted by regular little league teams and many volunteers. These helpers are called the angels. Since the little league uses the names of the major league teams, the dream teamers also get to be in one of those teams. So, Sarah is a New York Yankee. Check out the photo at right. The practice consisted of learning to go around the bases while making sure to touch all of them. Sarah did that 3 times. They also got to hit off the t-ball pipe. And Sarah was ecstatic about getting her uniform. The angels were so sweet...they really were angels. They made Sarah feel like the most important person in the universe. Sarah ate it up. I am so grateful to all the volunteers. The Dream League is a dream come true!

On Sunday's post, I'll have a full report on the first game this weekend.

Have a terrific Thursday everyone!

Warming Trend Continues/Happy About McDonald's Happy Meals

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
The jet stream will continue digging over the west and that means snow and rain out west on Wednesday. Cool spot will be northern Maine with highs in the teens. The south and southwest will be warm with highs in the 70s and 80s.

Houston is being dominated by the flow around high pressure to the east. Humidity and temperatures will climb. Lows will be in the 50s on Wednesday, and highs will be in the 70s. As the jet stream moves edges eastward htly by weekend's end, we should get some rain and even a few thunderstorms.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do baseball or béisbol, pronounced BAZE-bowl. I love this time of year, when we start gearing up to watch béisbol.

Children love games. See the AND MORE section to hear about what Sarah will be playing soon. We thought about this love of games when we put together our award winning DVD for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. That's why the very first volume has a chapter devoted to play. We find that kids love to watch other kids play. And while they watch, they learn Spanish. Order Volume 1 today from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. AND MORE
Sarah has her first softball/t-ball practice with the Dream League tomorrow evening. She is super excited. The first games are this Saturday. I'll let you know how that all turns out.

Did you know that the small hamburgers at McDonald's have only 9 grams of fat? I've known this for a while and here is my healthy meal when I go there. I get a hamburger kid's meal with milk and apples. That is very healthy--especially if you don't eat the caramel dip (that comes with the apples). They don't care that I order it and sometimes there are cookies which I can take home and share. And the bonus is that I get a kid's toy which I promptly give to some deserving kid (like Sarah). So, don't tell me that you can't eat healthy at McDonald's. The salads are good too but watch out for those full fat salad dressings--they can have more fat than an entire happy meal (with fries).

Why am I so observant about all of this? Well, I have high cholesterol and don't want to go on the medicine. I've been trying to be more and more careful with diet (even though I've never been too careless). So if you see me with a french fry, just whack it out of my hand.

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!

A Warmup/Poll Results/New Poll/You Knew It Wouldn't Last

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Big troubles today (even some fatalities) as the early March snow storm moved up the east coast. Tonight, it has wound down a lot. Focal point for wet weather on Tuesday will be extreme northern Maine and the west and Intermountain Region. It has really been coming down in north central California--so much so that several flood warnings were issued. This could become a big weather news spot over the next few days as the rain/snow aren't over yet. There will also be showers in Denver and Vegas--but wow, the highs there will be in the 70s.

Houston will be mild with some clouds. Lows will be in the 40s and highs will be in the upper 60s to low 70s. Expect temperatures and humidity levels to climb during the week. There will be some showers this weekend--Sunday being the most likely day.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do employment or empleo, pronounced ehm-PLAY-oh. Now if you are looking for employment, it is buscar trabajo, pronounced boo-SCAR trah-BAH-ho.

Well, I am trying to be self-employed and have thoroughly enjoyed working on our award winning DVD for children, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Today, we began the process for editing the last 2 volumes. We have figured out an optimal way to proceed. I'll have more soon. In the meantime, order Volume 1 today from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. AND MORE
Our poll about favorite pets has closed. Dog was the favorite, hands-down, with 64% of the vote. Cats and fish each came in at 14%. 8% said no pet was best. And no one selected bird, rabbit, hamster, snake, lizard or other as a favorite. I'm surprised about bird. I had 2 parakeets growing up. They were super easy to care for--just change out the newspaper, give them fresh water and food, and cover at night (also keep from drafts). Mine would fly around the room and land on my finger. And they sang so pretty. I never could get mine to talk. I wish I could have seen/heard that. Thanks for participating everyone.

Well, our new poll is about employment. Tonight, I ran into a neighbor, working at Walgreen's. I didn't know she was working there. She said that she and her husband were both in mortgage brokering and she lost her job. She said that it is best to work somewhere. I am so proud of her!!! I have been doing some part time work for a friend who owns a law firm, and I am having a ball...learning so much. I had never worked in a law office before. I have worked for a bank, at KFC, at a CPA firm, doing environmental consulting and of course, broadcasting. Producing my own DVD has been a combination of production, writing, financing, accounting, trademarking and more. Every job has been fun and fascinating. I love adding new feathers to my cap. So tonight, our new poll is about what you plan to do if you become unemployed. You may select more than one answer. Enjoy!

Congratulations to my step-daughter Megan. She is about halfway through her veterinary technician program and already making successful diagnoses. Her dog was rubbing its ear a lot. And Megan took it upon herself to get it checked out. She suspected ear mites--and guess what?! Bingo! She nailed it! Way to go Megan!!!

Well you knew it wouldn't last...that $1 Mister Carwash on Dulles has raised its prices. Now the price has gone up to a whopping $3!!! That's still the best price for a wash and hand dry by workers. Gordy tells me there is a carwash on Kirby that does the same for $4.

Have a terrific Tuesday everyone!!!

Week's Weather/Voice of Frank/Time Change Soon

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
March began with snow in Alabama and Georgia. Now the same storm causing the snow is winding up the eastern seaboard. It is going to be a difficult travel day on Monday. If you have flight plans, make sure to call your airline ahead of time. There will also be snow and some thunderstorms out west. In the middle of the country and through the southern states--nice quiet weather. Phoenix should make it into the low 90s. It will be coldest in the northeast and the Great Lakes with highs in the teens and 20s.

Houston will enjoy another sunny, dry day. As I write this, the entire area is under a Red Flag Warning due to high winds and dry conditions. Monday, the winds will die down. Look for a light freeze in outlying areas--protect those new plantings. Highs will be in the 60s. Temperatures will warm gradually during the week. There will be some showers by late in the weekend.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do savings or ahorros, pronounced ah-OR-ros. Don't forget to roll that rr. Soon, it will be time ahorros time again.

In my last blog, I promised to reveal the voice behind Frank the Horse in our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. It belongs to none other than my better half--Mr. Gordy Poole. I think he did such a good job that when I watch it, I forget that he is the one who did the voice. Gordy was always a big fan of Jim Henson with his muppets. He also counts meeting Mel Blanc as the one of the most memorable moments of his career. Gordy was so impressed that Mel came up with all of those Looney Tunes voices. I hope someday the world will get to hear all the voices Gordy can do.

Order your copy of the DVD today from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. AND MORE
Well heads up...next Sunday morning at 2 am, Daylight Savings Time returns. You will move your clocks ahead, i.e. spring forward one hour. So, we will lose an hour of sleep that night. For a while it will feel like we are waking up earlier and going to bed earlier. To me, this time change is harder to adjust to.

Only one more day for the pet poll...don't forget to vote.

Have a great week everyone!
