Warming Up/Next Front/New Poll/Garden Pests/Eating More Candy

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
One new area has popped up in the eastern Atlantic, but the chance for development is less than 30% (according to the NHC). In the eastern Pacific, there is tropical depression Nora and another area with less than a 30% chance for developing.

Upper low will sit over central US one more day and then lift out to the northeast over the weekend. This will swing a weak front through Texas, slightly increasing rain chances on Saturday. Hot spot on Friday will be Phoenix with a high near 100. There will be some 90s in Florida and over the western (non-coastal) US. Highs will be in the 60s around Denver and into the Midwest. Elsewhere, highs will be in the 70s and 80s.

Houston will have some showers again on Friday. Thursday, most areas averaged about 1/3 to 1/2 of an inch. Saturday, there could be a couple thunderstorms. A weak front will move through Texas, but I don't think it will cool Houston off. In fact, Friday's highs will be in the low to middle 80s and then warmer over the weekend. Next front moves through end of the coming week.

Our poll about favorite high temperature is closed. The high in Houston today was in the mid-70s, it was probably widely appreciated because 63% of our respondents said highs in the 70s are their favorite. 27% said they like highs in the 80s. 9% said they like highs int he 90s. No one said they liked higher or lowers than those numbers. Thanks to all who participated.

Now that the weather is cooling down, I thought it would be nice to see how you all feel about doing yard work. You can pick more than one type of yard work that you enjoy (or you can say that you don't do any yard work). Thanks in advance for participating.

Okay, my mother, with her eagle sharp gardening eye, noticed that I had these little white things on my sago palm. She took the liberty of asking about it at her favorite nursery. They said it was probably thrips and I needed to apply some all season horticultural oil using a sprayer. So, I picked some up and applied it. I'll let you know if it works. I will tell you that I saw a neighbor's yard with these little white things all over their sagos. Another friend told me that something wiped out all of their hibiscus plants (guess I'd better go check on mine). And, the Houston Chronicle ran an article in the past week that there are 4 pests attacking area plants (especially ornamentals). So, check out those plants everyone.

At the grocery store today, Patrice told me that all of sudden they are noticing that people are buying more candy. She speculated that maybe its a way of handling stress. I think people are looking ahead to Halloween and practicing their candy eating techniques. She also said that sales of beauty products have increased. She said that sales really dropped off over the summer. Now, women are telling her, you know what, I'm just going to go ahead and get what I want. I can tell you that I recently bought two new nail polish colors. But, that was because I didn't think my hot pink polish was very fall like. Who knows? Interesting observations there. Any thoughts?

Pleasant Weather Forecast/Next Rain/New Museum in Sugar Land

Fall officially began this afternoon. And in Houston, a nice cold front arrived to usher it in.

Hurricane season doesn't officially end until November 30th. But, it is nice and quiet in the Atlantic. New tropical depression has popped up in the Pacific and is forecast by NHC to become a weak tropical storm as it moves west. Should weaken before it becomes and issue for any land area.

Some parts of the country including the Rio Grande Valley have a threat for flooding this evening due to rain. Weather ahead of a cold front (and even behind it) is rainy. On Wednesday, there will be showers and thunderstorms mainly over the eastern US. Mid-level low over central US will kick out to east in a couple days bringing another band of rain through Texas. It will be chilly over the Rockies...Denver vicinity with some locations not breaking 50. Meanwhile it will be hot over the western mountain ranges with highs in the 90s. Elsewheres highs will be in the 70s and 80s.

Houston had some nice soaking rains today. Inside the loop, several locations picked up more than 2 inches of rain (data from the Harris County Office of Emergency Management). Sugar Land area picked up from 6/10 to just over an inch. And, as we began fall this afternoon, there was a pleasant coolness in the air. Look for some pleasant temperatures over the next 2 days. More storms move through Friday evening. There will be a stronger cold front a week from Wednesday.

Severe Weather Threat/Fall Begins Tuesday/My Favorite Billy Gilman Song

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Nice and quiet in the tropical Atlantic Basin and only one area with less than a 30% chance of developing in the Pacific.

Mid to upper low will be a big weather maker this week. It is over the central US. Now, it is supposed to push a cold front through the southern plains...with showers and thunderstorms (some severe along with it). Note, the slight risk for severe weather on Monday from north Texas into western Missouri. Nice and cool on Monday in Denver--high near 50. Phoenix, however, should be well over 100 for a high. 80s and 90s across the southeast and southern plains. Elsewhere, mainly 60s and 70s. Look for rain from the southeast into the Great Lakes (except dry in New England). There will be rain over the Rockies too.

Houston will be warm and muggy with scattered storms on Monday. Rain will be more widespread on Tuesday as the cold front approaches. Models say it will move through, but the air mass will be very shallow and the front will stall and produce some more rain even into Wednesday. Another weak front arrives Friday and then a stronger one the following Tuesday. Some of the storm on Tuesday could become severe. And, there could be some flooding.

Tuesday, September 22nd, will mark the official start of Fall. It is the autumnal equinox and according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, the official start is at 3:18 pm that afternoon (central time zone). This is the date in the Northern Hemisphere when the length of night and day are approximately the same (12 hours). The length of daylight will now be less than the length of night and will continue to decrease.

I have been constantly reminded of Billy Gilman since Megan returned from the MDA telethon. She is playing his music 24/7. Since I am also an expert, by exposure, I thought I would share with you my favorite of all of his songs. In fact, this might be my favorite song of all time. It's not the best recording (from his appearance on Larry King Live). But, I still hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. The song is called "My Time On Earth". Temperature and Rain Outlook Next 3 Months/More Wet Weather On Way

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Two areas being monitored in Atlantic...closest to US the remnants of Fred (at least in part). According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), less than a 30% chance to develop for both.

In the Pacific, we have Tropical Storm Marty, which the NHC forecasts a turning southwestward and weakening trend. A 2nd area closer to the Mexican coast has between a 30 and 50% chance of developing.

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has published its 3 month outlook (for October/November/December) for precipation and temperature for the continental US. Notice the above normal rainfall chances for the Gulf Coast and drought stricken areas of Texas. Temperature wise this area should be about average while much of the west should have above normal temperatures.

Drought-wise National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projects that from now through December the drought situation will improve in several areas including the most severely parched areas of Texas. There is still an excessive drought in coastal and southern Texas. So, this is good news!!!

On Friday, some thunderstorms southeast and southern Rockies with the hottest spot being Phoenix at about 100. 80s and 90s through the south and some 90s through the Intermountain Region. Feeling fall in the northeast with highs in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Houston, more semi-pleasant weather through the weekend with a gradual increase in humidity. Highs will be mainly in the 80s. New upper low slides into central US, putting Texas back in the wet flow starting early in the coming week and continuing for several days. So, just plan on taking your umbrella with you next week.

From the What is Sarah Up to Department:
How about sharing her love of chocolate milk with the whole family. Of course we were down to our last gallon of milk as I was behind on getting to the grocery store. Well, Sarah decides to embellish it by pouring most of a bottle of chocolate syrup into that one remaining gallon. MMMM...you know chocolate milk added to my meatball recipe makes an interesting taste...maybe something like mole meatballs...why she is a genius--that Sarah. It's not so bad--tastes good on cereal too.

Sarah often wakes up in the middle of the night and/or very early. Well at 4:30 am I hear this repeated beep, beep, beep sound. I'm thinking...now what is she doing? Well, she wanted a bowl of cereal. And somehow she figured that since the clean bowls were in the dishwashwer, pushing buttons on the front might make a bowl of cereal magically appear. You know...I think she is just ahead of her time...I'm waiting for a device where you can punch buttons and just have the dish materialize...dish/food and all (kind of like it works on Star Trek with the replicators). Ahhhh...if only. I tell you what...that would really be useful when you want little one to fix her own bowl of cereal rather than waking you up at 4:30 in the morning.

Megan and Billy Gilman/Mild Weather Continues/New Poll/Dark Lover

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
There are three areas being watched in the Atlantic (one the remnants of Fred). According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), all have less than a 30% chance of developing. In the Pacific there is one area with more than a 50% chance of developing.

In Louisiana and Arkansas, the low pressure area that brought us rain while it was over the Gulf, is meandering and has actually slid slightly to the southwest. Flood watches are in effect this evening for much of those 2 states. Looks like it won't lift out until the end of the week--bad news for these folks--flooding is a big concern.

On Wednesday, more rain for Arklatex and some scattered storms from the southeast into the southwest. A taste of fall in the northeast with highs in the 60s. Warm spot will be around Phoenix with highs near 100. Most of the rest of the country will have highs in the 70s and 80s.

Houston, we have not had 90s since the 8th of September. High today was only 82. Most recently, this is attributable to that low pressure area that moved in from the Gulf...first with its rain and then with the northerly flow around it (including cloud cover). For the rest of the week...we should see more of the same with isolated showers or thunderstorms possible.

Well tonight I was shooing a lizard out the back door. I barely touched the little guy, but his tail came right over. It was wiggling like crazy. Well, I've seen this before, but I got to wondering if that hurt him. So, I checked around and the consensus was that it doesn't hurt them, that it is a defense mechanism because their wiggly tail gets the attention of predators. Yesterday, Sarah and I put in our fall garden. We had very good luck with sweet peas last fall and winter. So, we decided to try a slight variation...sugar snap peas. We also put in broccoli and baby spinach--both firsts for me. Sarah had a ball getting dirty from head to toe. I wonder if this will make her grow more. She's growing so fast already. I'll be posting some photos once the plants start growing.

Finally, Megan posted her Billy Gilman photos on Facebook!!! As I posted previously, Megan fulfilled her life long dream of meeting him when she became his special guest at this year's MDA telethon. He was one of the celebrity performers. See photo at right. He sure has grown up. I will tell you that he was quite the gentleman--very kind to Megan. Who knows...maybe Megan will end up being Mrs. Billy Gilman (that's what I call her to tease her). Billy is now in Nashville working on his new CD. He is planning to go more country...a move I think is very smart for him due to the popularity of that type of music. Previously he performed a variety of music. He was the CMA Rookie of the year several years ago.

Okay Mom and Megan--don't read this part...last blog post, I asked you to fill in the blank. Twilight is to teenage girls as __________ is to adult women. The answer is the Dark Lover series of books. A friend gave me the first one as a gift. There are 7 written and the author may end up writing 3 more. I have 2 words for this series: "Oh My". Megan and Mom--you can't read this series. Nuff said.

No Grace but Maybe Fred Again/Sarah Marks Ike Anniversary in a Unique Way

Fred may redevelop as what is left of it drifts westward in the central Atlantic. Area that was in Gulf is now over northeast Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana and drifting northeastward. Pacific has only one disturbed area (with less than a 30% chance for development).

Today is the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Ike, the storm that pummeled Houston...knocking out power for weeks in some cases. As we drove down one Sugar Land street today, I noticed there are still some roofs with blue tarps.

Across the US on Monday, lots of readings in the 80s with thuderstorms along the Rockies and in the southeast. 100+ around Phoenix.

Houston will be warm and muggy with a few thunderstorms. We are on the back side of the upper low. There could be a few showers or thunderstorms each day with isolated downpours. Looks like the threat for widespread flooding is past for the time being.

In anticipation of the one year anniversary, Sarah decided to do something to remind us just how fun it was. She went to our 2nd refrigerator in the laundry room and cranked the thermostat all the way down to zero. By the time, I figured it out, most of the meat we store in that freezer was ruined. I had flashbacks as I threw packages of room temperature meat into the trash. We'll never forget Ike---not if Sarah has anything to do with it.

A couple weeks ago I told you about a severely disabled little girl who was visiting The Wiggles at the same time we did. The grandmother and mother have exhausted all of their savings as they valiantly care for this child. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a lot of financial help out there. You almost have to be living on the street (or take a vow of poverty as they say) before you can get any help. It's either that or get on waiting lists which take several years. This grandmother doesn't want to rely on the government...so they are having a fundraiser. Here is some information from an amazing lady, Linda Rosas:

Courtney's 1950's Rock & Bowl Benefit is set for October 4, 2009. It's a Sunday afternoon, from 4pm-7pm. The location is at Clearlake Lanes. This event is going to be fifties themed. So pull out your poodle skirts, leather jackets, sock hop attire and dippity do because we are going to rock on in the fifties style. The three hours will be jam packed with fun. There will be Houston's Elvis tribute artist Ralph Elizondo performing for the first hour from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. From 5:00pm-6:00pm there will be a hula hoop contest, yo-yo contest, best dressed and best dancers awards. Also included are door prizes and silent auction items. The last hour from 6:00pm to 7:00pm will be the bowling tournament and for those not bowling the party room will continue to be open for fun and entertainment from 6:00pm-7:00pm. Flooding Concern with TX Gulf Coast System

HURRICANES AND WEATHER

Even though Fred is turning in a direction toward the US, it is weakening. The big stories are the disturbed area along the eastern seaboard (New Jersey/MD/NY vicinity) and the area off the Texas coast. For the first system, there is potential for severe weather, coastal flooding and lots of rain. It is a non-tropical system which probably won't become tropical.

For the Texas system, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says less than a 30% chance for development. I say let's be prepared for heavy rain Friday/Saturday. This reminds me in some ways of Allison in 2001, because it is a non-tropical mid level system off the coast. As you may recall, Allison suddenly (and this is controversial) became designated as tropical about 6 hours before landfall along the upper Texas coast. The really bad part was when it stalled over land and meandered about, dropping 3 more rounds of heavy rain after landfall. In the current case, the storm should move inland and away from Texas on Sunday. It should be steered away from Texas because of the upper low over the central US. So bottom line is be ready for rainy Friday and Saturday in Texas (especially the coast) and also southwest Louisiana. There could be flooding. Then, things should get much better on Sunday. Whether this system becomes Grace remains to be seen.

100+ desert southwest today. Slight risk severe storms NJ/NY/MD/DE area. Thunderstorms over much of south and southeast. Most areas highs in the 60s to 80s. Those 80s will be humid anywhere in south.

Houston, look for some heavy rain Friday and Saturday with much improved weather on Sunday. Watch out for flooding and remember, Turn Around, Don't Drown.

New TX License Plates
My car turned 7 years old recently and I was surprised to learn that I had to get new plates. The good news was that it didn't cost extra (beyone the annual registration renewal) and I was able to mail in the application and not stand in line at the DMV...yay!!! The plates arrived within a week and I really like the more colorful version. So, you'll see these either on cars that are at least 7 years old or on brand new cars.

McAuliffe Middle School on the Mend and Improving After Ike
