Weather This Week/Hurricane Workshop Celebrity Sightings/Technology Recommendations

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Hurricane Season (for the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico) begins Monday, June 1st. One thing you should know is that when the FCC change to digital occurs this month, you will no longer be able to use the traditional analog battery powered TVs during a hurricane. If it is TV you want, then you need to invest in a digital battery powered TV (from a place like Radio Shack). According to one of the weather celebrities at the Houston Galveston hurricane workshop, these will run you about $300, but the prices should be dropping. At a minimum, have a battery powered and/or hand-crack radio and plenty of batteries. Also, I would recommend that you invest in a way to charge your cell phone. There are lots of options here. Even when phone lines don't work, you can often text on your cell. And with Twitter now popular, texting is going to become even more important.

Very tropical across the southeast US on Monday with high humidity and lots of 80s and 90s. Cool spots will be the northeast, Rockies and west coast with highs primarily in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Severe weather is a threat from the central plains to Ohio.

Houston will be hot and humid on Monday (although it will more humid by mid-week). Look for some thunderstorms starting Tuesday and on and off Wednesday and then early Thursday. It will be drier but still warm by the end of the week and over the weekend.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do celebrity or celebridad, pronounced seh-leh-bree-DAHD. Whom do I consider a weather celebridad? Find out in my AND MORE section.

We have 5 celebrities in our Award Winning series, Let's Learn Frank & Paco. They are Frank the Horse (a puppet who by the way has his own Facebook page) and Paco the Rooster as well as hosts Hannah, Megan and Christina. Go to our web site to see fun clips of all of them. And of course, you can order our award winning Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
Saturday, the annual Houston-Galveston workshop was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center--this time on the 1st floor due to the expected number of attendees. There were about 2500 attendees, double the number from last year. I was the moderator for two sessions of "Ask Your TV Meteorologist" at the annual Houston-Galveston Hurricane Workshop. The chiefs of the 5 main English speaking stations answered audience questions in 2 one hour sessions. In the photo from left to right are Frank Billingsley of KPRC, Channel 2, Gene Norman of KHOU Channel 11, Tim Heller (with microphone) of KTRK Channel 13, Keith Monahan of CW Channel 39 and Dr. Jim Siebert of FOX 26. This was the 2nd year of offering this sort of workshop and it was very popular with the public...lots of folks seated and standing. All of the chiefs are friends of mine and I was so proud of their intelligent answers and the way they took turns. If you missed it this year, make sure you attend next year.

Other "weather celebrities" who stopped by included Bill Read, Director of the National Hurricane Center, Gene Hafele, head of the Houston National Weather Service office, Frank Brody, head of the NASA Space Flight Meteorology Group, and Lew Fincher, well known hurricane historian and industry hurricane preparation specialist. I also saw Kristi Powers, John Dawson and Mike Iscovitz of FOX 26 and their new weather reporting, state of the art weather equipment loaded H2.

I have been asked to share with you that St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church will hold its First Annual Mini Health Fair on Sunday, June 21, 2009 from 9 am to 2:30 pm. The church is located at 827 Sheldon Rd. in Channelview, TX 7530 281-452-9865. This chuch and its parishioners were adversely impacted by Hurricane Ike and continue to work hard to recover.

Have a great week everyone and remember...this is the time to be preparing your home and family for hurricane season.

Weekend Weather/Hurricane Workshop and Outlooks/El Nino Coming?

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Tropical Depression One (which formed around midday Thursday in the western Atlantic) is no longer tropical. So, we won't get our Tropical Storm Ana (not yet) anyway.

Hot across much of the country on Saturday. The cool spots will be the northeast and Great Lakes with highs in the 50s to 70s and the west coast with highs in the 60s. Look for at least 100 for the high in Phoenix. There is a slight risk of severe weather from Missouri to Tennessee. There will also be some thunderstorms over south Texas and along the Rockies. Ridge over the western half of the US will begin to flatten in the next couple days. That will allow the Gulf to "open up" and that means more humidity on the way.

Houston, the weather is warming up! Highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 90s but morning lows will be in the 60s...(so get out an enjoy early). Humidity will be slightly higher on Sunday. Rain is not expected again until Tuesday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do storm or tormenta, pronounced tore-MEHN-tah. Tropical Depression #1 did not make it to being a tropical tormenta.

Some exciting news from our editor about Volume 2. He is about to lay in the animating text and the music. I will let you know as soon as it is ready. In the meantime, you can order our award winning Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
Saturday, come out to the George R. Brown Convention Center for the free Houston Galveston Hurricane Workshop (theme: Ready or Not). The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm and will have several excellent speakers and numerous informative booths. There is also an activity area for kids. I will be moderating the media panel sessions at 11 am and 1 pm.

The Weather Research Center has released its 2009 hurricane outlook:
http://www.wxresearch.com/outlook/
They are predicting 7 named storms, 4 of these being hurricanes. The numbers for an average season are 11 and 6. So that is below average. They also give Louisiana/Alabama a 70% chance of a storm strike (average is 68%) with Texas only having a 40% chance (average is 61%). till, don't forget to be prepared...there are still chances and it only takes one storm to make life miserable as we found out from Ike.

Interesting development...we were in a La Nina and trending toward a neutral pattern. Now, the waters of the eastern Pacific are warming so much that the thinking is there might be a new El Nino developing in time to add wind shear which will decrease the number of hurricanes (and lower intensities) for the 2009 hurricane season. Unfortunately, for the upper Texas coast, historically, we have had some of our most intense hurricane strikes occur during El Nino seasons or the seasons following an episode.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Pleasant Weather/Wedding Video/Becoming the Older Generation

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Friday, there could be some severe weather on the east coast...thunderstorms are possible over south Texas. Pleasantly cool in the northeast and on the California coast with highs in the 60s. Hot across the southwest and south with highs in the 90s.

Houston will be sunny and dry...cool mornings in the 60s and highs in the low 90s into the weekend.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do summer or verano, pronounced vair-AH-noh. It's almost time for verano break.

And I know you are thinking...what can I do to keep my kids minds engaged during the summer? Well, here's an easy answer--order our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
I finished editing my niece's wedding video--a labor of love to be sure. I realized that I really, really enjoyed the wedding. It was so neat seeing all 5 of my siblings, long lost relatives and old friends. It was also a milestone...marrying off the next generation and looking around at people I grew up with...realizing that we are now the older generation. It was bittersweet.

I am really enjoying this time in my life. The intense struggles of my youth are behind me. I intensely enjoy the small pleasures of every day.

More Pleasant/Dr. Neil Frank's New Career/New Poll

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Weak, late spring cold front has brought some storms to the south and southeast as it treks eastward. On Thursday, there may be some severe weather in south Texas and in Alabama and Georgia. Thunderstorms are possible across much of the southeast and northeast. Cool in New England with highs in the 50s and 60s and hot in the desert southwest--Phoenix should hit the century mark. Most of the rest of the country will reach the 70s and 80s with very steamy conditions ahead of the "cold" front.

Houston will be more comfortable on Thursday with a slight drop in humidity. Morning lows the next several days will be in the 60s with highs in the upper 80s to near 90. Look for rain to return early in the coming week.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do harvest or cosecha, pronounced coh-SAY-chah. Find out about our first corn cosecha in the AND MORE section.

We love to watch things grow--especially we like to see evidence that our children's minds are developing to their fullest potential. Research shows that language learning is very stimulating to brain development. Children who learn languages reap many rewards including improved cognition and memory. Now is a perfect time to order our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
What has Dr. Neil Frank been up to lately? How about coaching golf at the private school his grandchildren attend! And he has been quite a successful coach I might add. His granddaughter, a sophomore, placed 6th at state and his grandson, a senior, placed 6th at state. No wonder he is so good at the annual Weather Museum Golf Classic! His team almost always wins 1st place (and is usually comprised of members of his family). I think that he should be considered a pro now that he is a coach and all. Maybe next year we can hire out members of the Frank family as ringers. Congratulations Dr. Frank on yet another successful career!

The poll about home warranties is closed. 40% don't trust them and do not expect good service. 40% never plan to purchase a home warranty. 20% don't have a home warranty but want to learn more. 0% have one and like it. 0% have one and don't like it. 0% don't have one but plan to get one. Thanks to all who participated.

Hurricane season officially begins in a few days (June 1st). How are you feeling (especially those of you who went through Ike last year)? Our new poll gives you a variety of possible responses, and more than one answer is allowed. Enjoy!

We harvested our first corn cobs today. We might have been just a bit premature, but we just couldn't wait. Happy Summer!

Rain and Another Change/Excellent AC Repair/Dog Dominance

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
On Wednesday, thunderstorms in New Mexico and from Texas to the eastern Great Lakes to the east coast and southward to the Gulf. Hot and steamy for most of these areas. Nice and cool with highs in the 50s and 60s for the northeast and northern plains and parts of the west coast. Very pleasant with highs in the 70s for the Rockies, northwest and central plains.

On Wednesday, Houston will be muggy but a bit cooler with more clouds and some showers and thunderstorms. Drier air arrives on Thursday and although afternoons will still be warm to hot, the lower humidity will make conditions much more tolerable. Look for some showers to return on Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do dog or perro, pronounced PAIR-row and roll those rr's. This is not to be confused with pero (which means but--that's the conjuction not the bottom). If you roll the r more than a little, whomever you are talking to will think you are calling them a dog. So, be careful about that!

There is one perro in our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. He is our neighbor's Bichon Frisé named Max. There are also 46 kid which makes the DVD especially appealing to youngsters. They don't even realize they are learning. Order your copy from www.frankandpaco.com/. AND MORE
We took care of some of our neighbors' dogs from Thursday through Monday evening. I have to tell you, I learned a lot. There were two dogs. And on the first evening, it was obvious that all they wanted was for their masters to come home. Although they wagged their tails and barked a friendly greeting, they soon were looking past us to the door so that they would not miss their masters coming home. One perched herself on top of the couch so she could see as far as possible. The other one parked herself by the door to the garage (where the owners normally enter the home). As the days passed, they became more and more depressed. One of them ate only a half of a bowl of food the entire time. They would usually eat when we were there. On the last day, I noticed that the most depressed one began to take ownership of me. When I showed attention to the other dog, she got very mad at the other dog and gave it what for. I thought maybe she is thinking the masters aren't going to return and she had better claim her stake on me. Fortunately, the masters did return. Haven't been for a visit since that happened. Wonder what kind of reception Sarah and I would get. Well, we should did enjoy giving them some loving.

Last week, we had our bad a/c coil replaced. By the way, Gordy was very pleased with Martin, owner of Critical Air Residential Air Conditioning & Heating 281-468-4250. He was recommended to us by a friend. Well, first of all, Gordy was attending to Megan while she was having outpatient surgery (don't worry--she's okay...just a foot thing) and he wasn't able to be there when I interrogated poor Martin. Well that patient man spent an hour with me going over every possible scenario I could come up with (purchase wise). When I opted just to replace the coil, he did not give me a hard time and for $1800 even, he did the following:

Installed a 4 ton evaporator coil along with a new plenum, transition plus access door, secondary pan and float switch. Installed a new liquid line drier. Vacuumed and charged the unit. This also includes 1st year parts and labor warranty on coil and 5 year total parts. Now, he had a minor outpatient surgery the day before our installation and yet, the day of, he came out and was overseeing the entire thing. I told him I was going to tell on him to his doctor.

So, as you may have surmised, we did not replace our ac compressor which is still working. Instead, today I purchased a home warranty through American Home Shield (which a friend told me about). http://www.ahswarranty.com/ I have no idea if it will be any good. But, I just couldn't stomach buying a new compressor when our's is still working.

For about $500/year just about everything in our house is covered. They didn't have to come out and inspect and I've got the contract that says so. The age of the home does not matter. Everything just has to be working. I'll let you know how it all turns out when we actually have to get something repaired. Oh yeah...there is a $60 charge for each initial service call. But there are no other charges after that. I wish I had known about this before replacing the built-in microwave 4 times, the oven once, the dishwasher once, and the garbage disposal once (not to mention a few repairs on our clothes washer). All of these items would have been covered. There is no limit on the number of claims per year.

So, with all of that in mind, don't forget to take our poll about home warranties.

Now, I'm considering a warranty for my Honda Accord which has about 112K on it. We've replaced the timing belt, but you never know when the transmission, a/c, or brakes might go. I hear there are warranties going up to 250,000 miles. Will let you know what I find out.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Weather for the Week/Memorial Remembrance/Hurricane Workshop

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
What is left of the Gulf system continues to produce large spiraling bands of rain mainly over the eastern 1/3 of the country. Another big weather feature is the cold front and pre-frontal storms marching across the plains. On Tuesday, look for scattered storms across the southern Rockies, southern Plains, Midwest to the East Coast, and down to the Gulf Coast. Cool spot will be the western Great Lakes states to the northeast. Hot and steamy across the south and southeast with highs in the 80s and 90s.

Houston was spared severe weather...just one severe cell popping in Jefferson County (Beaumont/Port Arthur area) this Sunday evening. There will be some scattered thunderstorms on Tuesday and more so on Wednesday as a cold front approaches. Temperature wise, it won't get cold on Thursday but it will be cooler and the humidity will be lower all the way through Saturday. Yeah!!!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do hero or héroe, pronounced AIR-oh-aaaaa. Do learn about some special heroes this Memorial remembrance day, see the AND MORE section.

This coming Saturday, May 30th, I hope you will make time to attend the annual Houston/Galveston Hurricane Workshop being held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Bill Read of the National Hurricane Center will be there as well as many experts and hurricane supply vendors. There will also be numerous excellent presentations and displays. The workshop is from 10 am to 2 pm and is open and free to the public. I will emcee the ask the media sessions being held at 11 am and 1 pm. Hope to see you there!

The photo at right was taken by my brother-in-law's father. Alex Feldman wrote to me: This is a photo taken during one of my fathers convoys to North Africa during WWII. My dad always took Memorial Day seriously. I never appreciated why until I got a little older. The caption says: "The first wave of about 9 JU-88s attacked from dead ahead. Their torpedoes detonated high explosives on board SS John Hamilton, blowing her out of the water and killing about 580 men on board."

Let us never forget!

Gulf System Bringing Rain/Good Use for Old Phones/Full Time Job

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Gulf system is now spinning over Arkansas...sweeping very long bands of rain over the southeast and south central part of the country. One of the bands is "training" over the Houston area. So, look for repeated bursts of thunderstorm activity for much of this Sunday afternoon.

Monday, that low center should lift northeastward into the Ohio Valley continuing to spin long bands of rain. Much of the country except northeast and west coast have at least a chance for rain. It will be warm and muggy east of the Rockies. And look for some 80s in the interior West...60s along the west coast. Coolest states will be the northern tier with highs in the 60s (50s in Maine).

Houston will be warm and muggy with about a 40% chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms on Monday. Looks like a hot and humid last week of May on the way.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do phone or teléfono, pronounced teh-LAY-foh-no. Do you have any old cell phones...find out about a special project in the AND MORE section.

Hurricane Center Increases Odds of Development

Here is the Friday evening update/change from The National Hurricane Center. See updated figure (to right) showing 30 to 50% chance for development.

A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IS CENTERED OVER THE GULF OF MEXICO ABOUT 200 MILES SOUTH OF PENSACOLA FLORIDA. SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES THAT THE ASSOCIATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO INCREASE THIS EVENING. ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM ISPOSSIBLE...AND A TROPICAL DEPRESSION COULD FORM BEFORE THE LOWMOVES INLAND OVER THE NORTHERN GULF COAST ON SATURDAY. AN AIRFORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT WILL INVESTIGATE THE LOWTOMORROW...IF NECESSARY. THERE IS A MEDIUM CHANCE...30 TO 50PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THENEXT 48 HOURS. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT...HEAVY RAINS AND OCCASIONALLY GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED ALONG PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN GULF COAST TONIGHT AND SATURDAY...AND INTERESTS IN THIS AREA SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THE SYSTEM.ANOTHER SPECIAL OUTLOOK ON THIS SYSTEM WILL BE ISSUED EARLY SATURDAY MORNING...IF NECESSARY.

First named storm will be Ana (by the way).

Still Watching Gulf/Memorial Weekend Weather/Graduations

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
The National Hurricane Center issued this special statement about Invest 90L on Friday Afternoon.
SATELLITE IMAGES INDICATE THAT SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OVER THE NORTH-CENTRAL GULF OFMEXICO HAVE INCREASED TODAY. SOME SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEMIS POSSIBLE AS IT MOVES SLOWLY NORTHWARD...AND AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT WILL INVESTIGATE THE LOW TOMORROW...IFNECESSARY. THERE IS A LOW CHANCE...LESS THAN 30 PERCENT...OF TROPICAL CYCLONE DEVELOPMENT IN THIS AREA BEFORE THE SYSTEM REACHESTHE COAST ON SATURDAY. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT...HEAVY RAINS AND OCCASIONALLY GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED ALONG PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN GULF COAST TODAY AND SATURDAY.

So, they have less than a 30% chance for development into a tropical depression. One thing we know is that it can produce copious rainfall. Nearly 2 feet of rain fell in northern Florida.

All models track it northwest, north or north-northeast into the north central Gulf.

On Saturday, most of the country will have highs in the 70s and 80s, warmer in the southwest, and cooler (60s) along the west coast, Great Lakes and northern New England. Showers and thunderstorms are expected everywhere (see Storm Prediction Center map at right). There will be little change on Sunday.

Houston, wasn't the cloudiness nice today? Yes it was warm and humid, but the clouds (from the circulation around the large system in the Gulf) kept us a bit cooler. This isn't a tightly organized circulation where dry air is being pulled around the west side. I think there will be rain bands over us both Saturday and Sunday. Don't know if it will be enough to cancel soccer and baseball games (sorry Marilyn), but it will be a factor in outdoor activities. Remember the best way to be safe around lightning is to move indoors. Monday, when many are observing Memorial Day, should have the least rain...but a lot will depend on how that system tracks. Will let you know, but I think you'll get that barbecue done.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do graduation or graduación, pronounced grah-dju-ah-see-OWN. It's finally here, graduación time.

Keeping a close eye on system in Gulf

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Don't have time for much tonight...so will concentrate on system in Gulf...looking better organized and wind shear is dropping. With start of official hurricane season June 1st, we are close enough to not rule out this becoming a tropical depression. Look for rain along the Gulf coast and depending on ultimate track maybe even into Texas. I do think there will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms this weekend.

In 2001, we had an early season tropical storm named Allison (June 4th initial landfall). Steering environment was very weak and it is fairly weak now. The danger with these rainmakers is that they can slow way down. Right now, models point to Louisiana bearing the brunt of it all. So, we shall see. Will update you as needed.

Local and Gulf Weather/New Poll/Another Wedding Story

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Still watching an area of low pressure -- now in the eastern Gulf...it is not a tropical storm but you just never know. If nothing else it will produce rain along it's path. Models indicate a westward track...still don't know if it will make it to Texas. But I would say that given the steering environment, chances are good...maybe Coastal Bend will get a nice drink of water. Stay tuned.

On Thursday, there will be scattered storms over the southeast and from the southwest to the Great Lakes. Most highs will be in the 70s an 80s, warmer in the desert southwest. Northern tier and west coast will have highs in the 60s.

Houston, humidity and temperatures will climb on Thursday. Depending on what system in Gulf does, there could be rain on and off starting this weekend. Stay tuned.

Watching Tropics/Drought Report/Twins Update

HURRICANES AND MORE
All eyes are on Invest 90 (as labeled by The National Hurricane Center). This is an area of low pressure over the Bahamas. There is also a 2nd area of low pressure (non-tropical) over Florida. There was a possibility that a recon flight would be sent to the Bahamas low, but that was scrapped as no development is indicated and the area is being absorbed by the Florida system (which by the way has brought welcome rain to drought plagued Florida). We will watch all of this as it drifts western into the Gulf of Mexico. Models are all over the place as to where it will end up. And there might be some development as the system encounters less wind shear over the Gulf waters. Hurricane Center has less than a 30% chance for tropical development--in the near future. So, I will keep a watchful eye.

50s and 60s for highs today west coast, Pacific Northwest, northern states and northeast. Most other areas will have highs in the 70s and 80s...hotter (some 100s southwest). There will be showers and thunderstorms in Florida and over the Rockies and southwest.

Houston will be sunny and pleasant. Wednesday will also be very comfortable. Some higher humidity starting Thursday and possibly a shower. Some showers and thunderstorms end of week and over weekend.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do drought or sequía, pronunced seh-CWEE-ah. There is a terrible sequía around Corpus Christi. See AND MORE section for details.

While we were in the valley, I enjoyed hearing Spanish spoken more frequently. Your child is well equipped to learn more than one language. Research shows that young minds have an amazing ability to do so and they enjoy tremendous benefits such as improved cognitive development. Help your children discover Spanish...order our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Courtney has done missionary work in Mexico and enjoyed learning and speaking more Spanish. AND MORE
I am giving up on the polls for a while...sorry I did not get results for the Rockets respect poll. Will let you know when we can try again.

Happy to report that little Michael and Alexander are both home. These are Ned and Danielle's identical twin boys. Their big brother Teddy is very excited they are all together and no more running back and forth to the hospital. Yay!!! Congratulations and welcome home!

Do you remember back in November, I was talking about my cousin who had been in a car accident where 3 of the 5 occupants had been killed? Well I am happy to report that she has made an amazing recovery. I saw her at the wedding reception and she looked fantastic. She said she is still doing therapy to recover from her head injury, but she has made a lot of progress! Well, I could certainly tell and it was just wonderful to see her beautiful face!!!

The photo of the bride and groom is one of my favorites. I always love that moment as the bride and groom cross that threshold from their reception to their new life together. I was right by the door (the threshold) when I took this photo. Hunter had already looked up and could see the crowd which had gathered to congratulate and cheer them on. Courtney had bowed her head (to make sure she wouldn't trip on that beautiful dress) but also I think she was taking a deep breath. This is it!!! Everyone had little cowbells to ring and celebrate the glorious moment. They are now on their honeymoon and we are very happy for them.

Well, when we returned from the wedding festivities, I couldn't wait to check out our corn (even though it was dark). In just 4 days, the plants had grown a foot!!! But, most importantly, we had corn cobs already on 3 plants...see photo. I know those wasps buzzing around helped with the cross-pollination. Thanks wasps. Most of the neighborhood kids have been over to check out the plants and of course, they want to pick the corn. My stepdad Gerry said that you know the corn is ready when the fine hairs, on top of the cob, turn brown. I want to especially thank Gerry for suggesting using the Miracle-Gro spray attachment. I think that helped tremendously. By the way, Gerry wants me to put in a daily forecast for Bandera. Do you think I should do that? Today will be warm, sunny and dry. You're welcome. Ha!

Speaking of dry weather, it rained at Courtney's wedding which was in Harlingen. That area has been suffering with drought for a few years. Someone told me this was the first rain in 2 months. Unfortunately, the Coastal Bend (around Corpus Christi) did not get any. I am telling you all, I have never seen it so dry...it is getting to be like Grapes of Wrath with dirt fields, crops not planted due to lack of irrigation water and what crops have been planted are pathetic little nothings. Even some of the trees are dieing. It's bad!!!

Well, that's all for now.

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Frog Weather in Florida/We love you Rockets/Best Wedding Reception Ever

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Hello all -
Well, the really big weather story this week will be what is happening in the southeast...especially in Florida. Models are insisting that an area of low pressure is forming between the Bahamas and Florida and will be a big rainmaker as it slowly moves across Florida and then across the southeast. Conditions are not favorable for a tropical storm to develop. But it still looks like a prolonged period of wet weather.

Meanwhile, most of the country is shifting to dry and pleasant...coolest temperatures across the northern plains and Great Lakes and warm and dry (with cool mornings) across much of the south, midwest, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys. Enjoy!

Houston, the sun will be back out and expect pleasant weather all week...a slow increase in humidity starting mid-week. Lows in the 50s into Thursday morning. Highs in the 80s through Thursday. OOOHHH--AAAHHHHH.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do husband or esposo, pronounced ehs-POH-soh. Congratulations to my niece Courtney, who now has an esposo (Hunter). Happiness Always!!! I will get a photo of the newlyweds up in the next day.

Courtney told me that if she has little ones, she will definitely have them watch our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Courtney has done missionary work in Mexico and enjoyed learning and speaking more Spanish. You can order your copy from www.frankandpaco.com/. You can also order from http://www.venturaes.com/, http://www.dololanguages.com/, http://www.carlexonline.com,www.thecuriousmindstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/,http://www.bestbuy.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. Volume 2 is almost ready for release and Volume 3 will follow soon thereafter!!! For our English as a Second Language (ESL) version, got to http://www.frankypaco.com/.

AND MORE
I just want to tell the Rockets that I am so proud of them. They fought the fight. 3 to 4 should demands respect. I know. I know. It's all about the W. But sometimes, even that isn't good enough. Remember how in the mid 90s, Sports Illustrated did the unthinkable and snubbed the champion Rockets. You can't get better than winning it all, but apparently that wasn't enough.

Anyway, I can't close the poll however because the gadget that controls it is acting up. But, I will let you know when I get it changed. Thanks to all who participated.

Really enjoyed the wedding. Sarah was a flower girl. The wedding reception was held at a neat place called Puesto del Sol in western Houston. It is a huge home which is now being used for receptions, corporate get togethers and more. There is lots of stone and western decor. They have a neat pool in the back with a graduated (sloping) entry. The band was outstanding and the dancing went on for hours and hours. I know I can't do what I used to. I think every bone and my muscle was hurting when I woke up this morning. But, it sure was fun!!!

Have a great week everyone!

Saturday Morning Weather Update

Just a quick update this Saturday am...showers and thunderstorms are developing and moving eastward in a line from central Texas into southern Arkansas/northern Louisiana. Storm Prediction Center has not issued in risk areas yet.

For Houston, some drier air on the way!!! It is going to be a very pleasant week. Don't miss it because summer heat and humidity are going to dominate soon.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend Forecast/Tropical Development/Inflation at the Car Wash

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
High pressure will build toward the eastern US over the weekend. On Saturday, there will be some storms from Texas to the eastern seaboard. On Sunday that line shifts further east so that the eastern seaboard and Gulf states get wet. Saturday, it will be hot and humid ahead of this rain area. Very pleasant along the west coast and in the northern states and Rockies. Sunday, the pleasant weather pushes further east.

Houston, pleasant weather returns Sunday!!! Look for lows in the 50s and 60s next week with highs in the low 80s climbing to upper 80s by week's end. There will be some showers and thunderstorms mainly late Saturday into Sunday morning. A few showers are still possible during the day on Sunday.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do swim or nadar, pronounced nah-DAHR. Time to nadar...it's hot!!!

We have some action scenes of kids swimming in our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Kids love watching other kids do fun things...I think that is why the DVD is so well received.

AND MORE
Been very busy with wedding festivities for my niece, Courtney. Saturday is the big day and Sarah is a flower girl. I'll let you know how her trip down the aisle goes.

The National Hurricane Center is experimentally going to use the wind ranges for the Saffir-Simpson scale only. They say this is to avoid confusion because the original scale had pressure and storm surge factored in as well. I personally think this is the exact opposite of what we need to do. I think we should re-familiarize everyone with the original 3 parameters and that the Hurricane Center should issue statements with the worst case deciding the category. If storm surge had been used to categorize Hurricane Ike, it would have been rated a Category 4 storm. Instead, it officially goes down as a Category 2 even though it is the 3rd or 4th most costly storm on record!

Speaking of storms, models are hinting at tropical development in the northeastern Gulf or over Florida early to middle of next week. Conditions aren't great and it would happen before the official start of hurricane season which is June 1st. But, if nothing else, look for some rainy weather in Florida and the southeast US next week.

I've been meaning to let you know that the Mister Carwash on Dulles in Missouri City has now gone up to $5. Remember, it started at $1 and then went to $3. Even at $5, it is still a good deal with people hand drying the car and free vacuums.

Happy Weekend everyone!!!

Relief on the Way/Tax Credit Stimulus Recovery/Corn Crop

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
There is a moderate risk for severe weather for a portion of Missouri and Illinois on Wednesday. Highs will be it the 40s, 50s and 60 across the northern 2 rows of states and in California. Look for some thunderstorms in Florida and some showers in the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies and northern Plains.

Houston will be hot and humid again. But there is some big news!!! Less humid air will arrive early in the coming week, giving us mornings in the middle 60s and more pleasant conditions into Wednesday. Afternoons will still be in the 80s. This might be our last real break before the onslaught of summer. So, get ready to enjoy! A few showers and thunderstorms are possible over the weekend.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do corn or elote, pronounced eh-LOW-tay. I've got a miniature corn crop growing in my backyard. See AND MORE section for more information.

Our kids grow as fast as weeds. Time is short, especially the optimal time for learning languages--primarily before the age of 8...that is when 80% of neurological development has occurred. Brain scans show that children who learn multiple languages have more neurological development in their brains. So get going...stimulate those young minds! Order our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco from www.frankandpaco.com/.

AND MORE
I am growing corn in the backyard (as mentioned in previous posts). Check out the latest photo at right. The instructions say you need a minimum of 4 rows. I have exactly that. I may help the fertilization process along by using a Qtip to swab from tassle to tassle. But I did see a good sign...wasps buzzing around. They can serve as that mechanism.

We have a leak in our ac coil and are considering replacing the entire system. I did some checking and this is a good time to do so. In fact, if you use approved products, you can deduct 30% up to $1500 for an installed AC system (labor is included). This is part of the stimulus recovery. And you can do this through 12/31/10. Also, if you have been recharging you system, you should know that the ozone harming R22 will be phased out in about 2 years...then you will have to buy a converter so that your system will be able to handle the more environmentally friendly type of freon. This should cost about $700.

Check out this site for approved HVAC items:
http://www.ceedirectory.org/ceedirectory/pages/cee/ceeSearchMain.aspx

Also for 2009 and 2010, there are similar tax credits for eligible window and doors, insulation, roofs (metal and asphalt), water heaters (non-solar), biomass stoves. Through 2016, you can get credit for geothermal heat pumps, solar panels, solar water heaters, small wind energy systems and fuel cells. For more information, check out this link:

I had the pleasure of visiting with the fine folks at Dow in Freeport this morning. I gave them a presentation on important points from Ike and some things that folks still need to know. I had never driven down to Freeport. So, this was really interesting. The people at Dow were very knowledgeable--asking great questions!!! I enjoyed the visit!

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!

Any Heat Relief Coming?/Rockets vs. Lakers--What Do You Think?

HURRICANES AND MORE
On Tuesday, look for some severe storms in Nebraska and South Dakota. Note that on Wednesday, their is a moderate risk of severe storms in eastern Missouri and western Illinois. There will also be some showers and thunderstorm along the eastern Gulf Coast and a few thunderstorms over the northern Rockies and northern Plains. There also might be a thunderstorm in Boston. Highs across the northern half of the country will be in the 50s and 60s and 70s. Most of the south (except California) will have highs in the 80s, 90s and even 100s (Arizona).

Near Cleveland Monday afternoon, some hail fell. Tuesday should be just another hot and humid day...rain chances very low--about 10%. Long range...there could be some storms over the weekend. Slightly higher humidity is likely early in the coming week.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do basketball or baloncesto, pronounced bah-lone-SEHS-toe. What do you think about the Rocket's performance in their series against the Lakers? See AND MORE section to find out how you can voice your opinion.

Weather for the Week/Postal Increases/A Ticket to Avoid

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Some tornado warnings have been issued in northern Louisiana this Mother's Day afternoon. On Monday, severe weather will develop in northeast Texas and northern Louisiana. It will be hot across the south with lots of 80s and 90s. Most of the northern 2/3rds of the country will enjoy highs in the 50s, 60s and 70s with some showers in the Pacific Northwest. There will also be some rain in the southeast and around DC and Norfolk.

Houston, it looks like this week will continue hot and humid with very low chances for rain. There is a hint of a few thunderstorms during the coming weekend.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY

Did you know that if an officer has his light on at the side of the road, you are supposed to either move over a lane or if in the lane next to the officer's car, you have to reduce your speed to 20 miles below the speed limit. Postal rates have increased by 2 cents per one ounce piece of mail. The USPS web site says that you can still use your Forever Stamps for 1 ounce pieces of mail--no extra postage required. Severe storms for some/A special mother's day story

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Some storms this weekend from Texas eastward to the East Coast...look out in DC and New York City. Highs--40s to 60s across most of the northern states with 70s to 90s (a few 100s southwest) across the southern 1/2 of the country.

Houston will continue hot and humid after hitting 90 on Friday. A slight cool down and lower humidity (and I do mean slight) early in the coming week. Our a/c will be working hard. A great weekend to hit the pools!

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do love or amor, pronounced ah-MORE. Make sure you show your mom how much amor you have for her.

We love our kids....that's why we moms are looking for every chance to help them be all that they can. AND MORE
This week, as many moms did, I got to attend my child's mother's day presentation. I have to tell you this was very emotional--of course for me but also because of the moms in the room. We sat in a circle waiting to hear each child read from a special book they had assembled just for their moms. But what touched me so deeply were the looks in the eyes of each mom. You know they say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Well these were souls overflowing with infinitive love...the intensity of this emotion filled the room. One child's mother was late...so much so that I worried for him lest no one show to hear him read. Finally, his mother arrived, on the arm of her husband. As it turns out, she had had surgery and had to have the surgery out of the country. I could tell she was still in pain as she gingerly seated herself in the chair of honor. As her son read to her, tears flowed down her face. As she made way for the next mom and child, she apologized, saying that she had just returned and that it was the first time she had seen her son in a month. She said she was determined not to miss this special presentation. I thought, now that is truly a mother's love.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the wonderful "mothers" of the world!

Have a great weekend!

Some 100s/Toad Hunting/Healthy Food Options

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Jet stream will change little over the next week or so. That means that storms will ride across the central plains to the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and through the Appalachians and the Eastern Seaboard. That will be the case over the next 2 days with 2 areas at a Slight Risk of Severe Storms. Very hot across the southwest and south with highs in the 90s, even some 100s in west Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Highs will be in the 40s and 50s across the northern plains and northern Rockies...there will be some showers in these locations as well.

Houston will continue with the hot weather...more highs in the 90s...it hit 90 on Thursday. There might slight relief early next week. No big rain events are expected in the next week.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do salt or salar, pronounced sah-LAR. Sometimes we eat too much salar. See AND MORE for one solution to that problem.

Kids like to eat and there is a lot of that in our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. Kids who watch the DVD get a kick out of watching what other kids do. AND MORE
Sarah and I found 3 toads tonight. We named the first one Houdini because he kept finding ways to get away. We named the second one Don Juan because he was chirping like crazy (a sound only the males make--especially during mating season, which has begun by the way). The last one Sarah named after herself--Sarah. Another way to tell the males and females apart is that the females tend to be the big ones. The males are usually smaller. We made 14 videos about toads--with me narrating and giving information about them. They are on www.youtube.com. Just search for TOAD HUNTERS. Don't forget the caps. I also have a link to one of the videos in the favorite links list at right--scroll way down.

Sarah has gotten into baked sweet potatoes. I've been wanting to introduce these into her diet as they are rich in fiber and Vitamin A. I just bake them in the oven or microwave them. Cut them open and put in some healthy butter like Smart Balance and some salt. She loves 'em!

Speaking of salt--that is the reason canned vegetables are frowned at. But, now there are many options for no salt added. The difference is astounding--per serving the regular veges have about 220 mg of sodium. The no salt added variety has 10 to 15 mg of sodium. So, go ahead and eat that type of canned veges. They are good for you and you can't beat the convenience.

Happy Friday everyone!

Hot is the word!/A free weather event

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Hot is the word today across the south and southwest--lots of 90s including in Texas and the Houston area! There will be several areas with thunderstorms including the central plains and parts of the southeast. Check out the forecast from the Storm Prediction Center (at right). Nice and cool across the northern states with some locations enjoying highs in the 50s.

Houston is hot and steamy through the weekend...highs in the 90s. There is a hint of a slight cool down with slightly reduced humidity early in the coming week...and a slight chance for showers--but not big changes!

Hot and humid/Climate Prediction Center Forecasts

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Just checked the latest El Nino discussion from the Climate Prediction Center. We are trending to end the current La Nina and have a neutral year. This should result in a "normal" hurricane season with 12 tropical storms, 6 of those hurricanes and 2 major hurricanses The consensus is primarily that there should be an average number of storms this year. But, it only takes one to make misery. I'll have more on the approaching hurricane season (starts June 1st) in the coming weeks.

Mild to hot is what the weather is across the country from highs in the 50s, 60s and 70s over the northern 2/3 of the country and highs in the 80s and 90s across the south. There will be storms from Texas to Ohio and some in Iowa and Missouri. The Pacific Northwest will also be wet.

Houston will continue hot and humid for at least a week. Rain chances will be very low--10 to 20%.

I posted some figures from the Climate Prediction Center -- Temperature and Precipitation Outlooks for May, June and July. Looks like warmer than normal and average rainfall for the Houston area.

Tonight was the last night for teaching religion class. I enjoyed it soooooooooooooooooooooo much! Had a great group of kids. It's been quite an exercise for me instructing at the 1st grade level. Sometimes, they were just not with me. And sometimes, they would ask questions or make comments that would just knock me off my feet. Anyway, this group of kids was wonderful and I will miss them very much!

Happy Wednesday!

Summer has Arrived!/Twilight Poll Results/New Poll

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Some severe weather is possible in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas on Tuesday. There could also be thunderstorms from there to the eastern seaboard and some rain in the Pacific Northwest. The weather will be very mild of the entire country with 60s and 70s across the northern tier of states and 80s and 90s across the south.

Houston, wasn't the morning refreshing and wasn't the afternoon hot?!!! Well, the humidity has crept back in and it is really going to be hot for the foreseeable future! Rain chances will stay low however as the jet stream and associated disturbances stay well to the north.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do mom or mamá, pronounced mah-MAH. See our new poll to tell the world your favorite memory of your mamá.

Mamá is one of the first words we teach in our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. That is because that is a very important person to a youngster. And, mother or madre is too formal for little kids (and most of us for that matter). Order your copy from www.frankandpaco.com/.

AND MORE
Now that the weather has been dry for about a week, it is easy to forget those who were hit so hard by the torrential rains of the last 2 weeks. The following link to a Chronicle story by my friend, Leslie Williams, tells of one Bear Creek area family's plight:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/katy/news/6406428.html#
Thanks Leslie and keep 'em coming!

Thinking about planting corn...you had better hurry. My plants are growing fast thanks to all the rain and now the warm temperatures. But, you need to have enough plants to make it work...and I'll be honest. I've never grown corn before. But, I planted 4 rows (per the instructions on the package). I think I may help with the cross-pollinating just in case.

Our poll on the "Twilight" experience has closed. 28% said they enjoyed both the movie and book and 28% said they enjoyed only the book. 42% said they don't understand what the big deal is. (Gordy did you answer the poll? Ha! Ha!) 0% said they enjoyed only the movie, did not like the book, did not like the movie, don't plan to watch the movie, don't plan to read the book, can't stop thinking about it. Thanks to all who participated.

Our new poll honors our dear mothers--what is your favorite memory of your mom...only one answer is allowed. Otherwise, some of you might check them all. Enjoy! And Happy Mother's Day to all moms!

Now, that it is feeling like summer, I thought you might enjoy seeing the Climate Prediction Center's temperature outlook for the week ahead. Clear those winter clothes out of your closet! And, I have also posted the Climate Prediction Center's drought outlook. Things are projected to get better in Texas.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Summer Heat/Fence Frustration/Pools are Open!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
On Monday, thunderstorms will pop along a cold front moving through the southeast. There will also be some over the central and northern Plains. There will also be some showers in the Pacific Northwest. Highs will be in the 60s and 70s across the northern 2/3rds of the country and in the 80s and 90s over the southern 1/3.

There were some severe storms well to the northeast of Houston on Sunday but the activity did not make it into Houston. On Monday, Houston will be hot and slightly less humid than on Sunday. Temperatures will be even hotter for the rest of the week. It will feel like summer all week long and rain chances will be very low.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do fence or cerca, pronounced SAIR-cah. Check out my fence story in the AND MORE section.

It's time to learn, it's fun to learn with Frank & Paco. Those are the lyrics for our award winning DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco. It has been honored as one of the Top 10 Educational Products of 2008 from Dr. Toy. We also were recognized as a Top 15 Educational product by Homeschool.com. AND MORE
Now it really is feeling like summer! In First Colony, the Magnolia, Lexington and Woodstream Pools are open on weekends (they opened this weekend 5/2 and 5/3). The weather was perfect for the opening--nice and hot. And surprisingly the water at the Magnolia pool wasn't all that chilly. Last year, I remember that on the first day, the water was very cold--brrrrr! You can pick up your pool tags Monday through Saturday, but they'll only give you 4 this year. They said that everyone was picking up 6 last year and they ran out. Well I say rats!!!

Speaking of the neighborhood, we and our neighbor to the east got a notice that our new fence was out of compliance. They said that one piece on the side showed the back of the fence and that it was visible from the road and that isn't allowed. They attached a quote of the covenant language and it did say that. But here is the mega-frustrating part--this is exactly how it was made to begin with. I have pictures to prove it. And there are several existing configurations in our neighborhood which were not replaced which look just this way. Ooohhhh...this kind of thing burns me up! And to add insult to injury, the letter said to just take off the cross piece and put it on the back. Well, I'm no genius carpenter, but I can tell you that just won't work!!! It would fall apart! We didn't get to replacing it--our dear neighbor took it upon himself to make it look right and we are so grateful. That's what I love about our neighborhood. Our neighbors are the best!!! Thanks Dave and Trish!

Have a great week everyone!

Severe Storm Threat for Weekend/Go Houston Rockets!

HURRICANES AND WEATHER
Fierce storms are firing up late today ahead of a cold front. As I write this post, there have been 3 tornadoes in the Texas Panhandle, and that area and a small part of N. Texas and Oklahoma are at a moderate risk for severe weather overnight. On Saturday, look for severe storms anywhere from Texas to the central part of the East Coast. There will also be showers along the west coast and over the Rockies. Pleasantly cool over the northern half of the country and the west coast with highs in the 50s and 60s. Warm and muggy across the southern tier of states with highs in the 80s and 90s.

Sunday will be more pleasant for locations even further south as the cold front eases southward. The high in Dallas will only be in the 60s with lower humidity. Look out for severe weather for south Texas over to Alabama and north to Tennessee.

Houston will be warm and muggy this weekend with severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening. Then, the weather will be quite pleasant on Monday. Enjoy it while you can! Summer heat and humidity are trying to make a more lasting return to the area.

SPANISH WORD OF THE DAY
Let's do honor or reconocimiento, pronounced ray-cone-oh-see-mee-EHN-toe. Someone I love is getting a special reconocimiento tonight! See AND MORE section for details.

And speaking of awards and honors, our Volume 1 DVD, Let's Learn Spanish with Frank & Paco, has been honored as one of the Top 10 Educational Products of 2008 from Dr. Toy. AND MORE
I drove by the Toyota Center around 10 am this morning and there were quite a few people in Rockets garb, lining up to buy tickets for the next round of playoffs for the Houston Rockets...yeah!!! Go Rockets! Anyway, there are huge pictures of the players looking fierce--it is really neat to see. Next victims--the Lakers!

Congratulations to my step-daughter Megan for being inducted tonight into the Omega Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. We are so proud of you!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!
